White House: Chicago ‘Good Illustration’ of the Need for National Gun Control (Read 15554 times)

I think there are quite a few places that provide a compelling argument that it's bad news when only criminals can own guns.

Chicago. New York City. D.C. Etc.

I do agree and I have used this argument with anti gun people before, however I must admit that there is a weakness to the argument. We have successfully proven that the gun control laws in Chicago have failed, problem is that this only opens the door to the counter argument that gun control has failed because it wasn't large enough and thus the gun control needs to be expanded (state wide or country wide). When we show that gun control in Chicago has failed we haven't shown that gun control cannot work, we have only shown that their specific form of gun control won't work. They will just say, ok this type didn't work, we need another type, thus the attempts at pushing for national gun control.

I don't have a strong rebuttal for this yet though because at a certain level gun control will work at reducing gun crimes, that is to say, if there are no guns then there will be no gun crime. My only rebuttal at this point is that a lack of guns doesn't mean a lack of violence, only a lack of gun violence.

We should make cocaine and heroine illegal nationwide then there would be no heroine or cocaine use or overdoses.
Dang it. We did that and it doesn't work. People are still going buy and supply it. Legal or not.

Outlaw guns and only criminals will have guns. Many with evil intent.

Note that I said if there are no guns, then there can be no gun crime. I did not say that banning all guns would mean no gun crimes. Of course outlawing guns would not mean there would be no guns. It would however make guns harder to get and thus, some level of reduction in gun crimes. My personal rebuttal is twofold, we would save many more lives by combating the problems that contribute to crime and that the benefits and services that private firearm ownership provide outweigh the reduction.I then point out that many more children die in home pools than by firearms. (a statistic I recently discovered)

Anyone who wants to discuss, debate, or support an agenda with the category "gun crime", "gun violence" or "gun deaths" is starting from a dishonest position at the outset.

Misinformed or ignorant? Yes. Dishonest? Not always.

Good video, thanks. Interesting that the more asians that live in your area the fewer murders there are. That must be why we have so few murders, we have lots of asians!

I don't think it's a race thing.  Lots of crime also in Asia, especially south China and south east Asia.  Lower crimes in Japan.

Higher education and better economic status goes a long way to deterring crime.  Also, when people believe they have a future and a hope, they will be less likely to live a life of crime.

New Hampshire and Vermont have lower murder/manslaughter rates than Hawaii.

Must be all those Asians living there.

I know, I just thought it was hilarious, the though of you being safer by having more Asians around. I personally carry 3 Asians to help reduce crime around me.
