UZI ~carbine~ legal in Hawaii?
« on: January 06, 2012, 09:45:12 PM »
Daggum it! Why did I have to idly search for "UZI" on GunBroker? I had no idea that 16" UZI carbines were so cheap. Reignited my childhood desire to own one someday. Well, I'm a big boy now and can do what I darn well please... wallet permitting...

Would the police freak out about it, though? With a stock and 16" barrel it ~should~ fall under the rifle regulations rather than the inane "assault pistol" tag that the pistol version has.

I'm assuming the 10 round mag limit would apply since, obviously, it can be used in the pistol version.

It's a long gun, therefore legal to own in HI--I've owned three myself, over the years.  Fun guns to shoot!

Would an UZI even count as an assault pistol?  I thought the rule was a detachable magazine outside the pistol grip, having two or more of the following completely cosmetic features?

As a kid the Uzi was the baddest gun on the planet to me.

huhn. I could have sworn the UZI pistol was specifically named as an assault pistol. (rummage.... rummage...)

Ah, here it is: http://www.honolulupd.org/info/gun_assault_pistols.htm

Fits at least 2 of these 3:

(4)  A manufactured weight of fifty ounces or more when the pistol is unloaded;

(5)  A  centerfire pistol with an overall length of twelve inches or more; or

(6)  It is a semiautomatic version of an automatic firearm;
but does not include a firearm with a barrel sixteen or more inches in length, an antique pistol as defined in this section or a curio or relic as those terms are used in 18 United States Code §921(16) or 27 Code of Federal Regulations 178.11.

$400 for the carbine in the shop on Oahu?

Wow. That's even cheaper that what I was seeing online. If I lived over there I'd be pretty darned tempted.

I need an UZI like a hole in the head, though.  :(

Once upon a time in Honolulu "Assault Pistols" were Legal!  We fought tooth and nail to prevent its passing.
but some some anti-gun nuts who couldnt tell youthe difference only because they looked mean banned them.
The HPD could not even provide data on how many there were in  Hawaii.  And the week argument that drug
dealers preferred them. Really? then how come most DDs were caught with revolvers at the time?
or cheap small semi auto pistols. I only saw APs used by DDs in movies.

If you bought it in 1991 it was no problem.  I bought all these in '91:

HK SP89 (Sold)
Cobray M11
TEC9 (Sold)
AP9 (Sold)
Calico M950 with 3 100rd 9mm Mags (Sold)
Calico M100 Pistol (Sold)
The UZI Pistol

But now I stuck with the last 2 can't sell them on this island.
I would have to say most of them are not worth shooting semi auto. no fun.
plus you gotta limit the caps to 10 rounds, plus they are too heavy.
I only have fun with the cobray because it is the easiest to bump fire.
The TEC9 and AP9 are rubbish in Semi.
