Target Distances At Rifle Range
« on: November 14, 2011, 12:30:16 PM »
Does anybody have the ranges for the steel targets out at the rifle range beyond 100 yards?  Heavies reported the farthest one to be 440 yards out but I'm not sure which one he is referring to.

Pictures would be a plus if anybody has them since it can be difficult to distinguish between "this" steel plate and "that" one.

TIA.

Depends on where you're sitting.

The last time I was there , I used a range finder from the far right side of the range ( next to the black powder guys)

The "swings" 238 yards, the deer was 242 yards, the gong on the mountain was 441 yards.

I guess the distance would be ideal if it was measured head on.  Short of that, knowing the stall/position from where the distances are shot should provide enough info to do the math from any position.

What are the rules for those targets on the hill? Anyone sitting anywhere can shoot them?

I think there's greater separation between the deer and those swingers.   Deer sounds about right, but I thought the swingers were a bit closer to 225 yds?  Anyhow there's also the set of steel out around 300+ yds on the right as well.  Last time I shot the gong head on, I want to say it was closer than 440 yds from where I was sitting.

FWIW the stall position does make for a pretty serious change in distances.

Or just bring a rangefinder

The swingers are at 225yds. At 200yds there are holes on the ground to place target frames. At 300yds there is some shot up pipes next to the swingers that marked the distance.

Awesome! Now if I could just find the deer, swinger and gong...

Be careful.  Uttering that sentence could get you arrested in a couple of states.

Some of those targets look like they could use some TLC. If some of us made up a few steel targets, do you think the RO's would put them up if they were donated it to the range?

If you make targets you can go out there before the range opens and put them up.  (put the red flag out so folks will know someone is out there, and go early enough to give time to do it)

I have made targets before and mounted them, but the mild steel I had lying around didn't last too long.  Guys shooting those Mags,  .338's and 408's did them in quite rapidly!  (Those guys should be making new ones and setting them up!)  Last time I was up there I noticed someone had shot the bolt off! :wtf:   I was kind of irritated, but eh, whatever.  I don't think the city is funding any of those targets, so its up to volunteers to put them up, if they want them.

Next time I'll make em smaller... 8)

Started nailing the steel targets farthest back at the range this weekend after putting on my new Warne steel scope rings and citing in my Tikka T3 Lite .270 win. I was able to hit the farthest plate that I could see for the first time on my second shot with a windage correction after my first shot struck left of the plate.  Wish I could have some pics of the targets with yardage so that I know the distances. Still saving up for a range finding scope. :(
