It's a detention (not free to leave) when police are pointing guns at you, yelling for you to stop, and searching you.

Now that I see the video again, I can see the barrel of the shotgun sticking out from his jacket so it was a good stop and search.  If he wasn't arrested and charged, then I'd assume it was an airsoft gun.  He could still be charged with a misdemeanor for that.

It's not a good idea to open carry where that's illegal (admittedly that's only in a few states, but still...).

Here's a new story from California, where it's also illegal to open carry any firearms, including long guns (enacted after those Black Panthers exercised their right at the state capitol...). Apparently this guy was just open carrying around the store, and never pointed the gun at the officers, who killed him. Can't wait to get the details on this one.:

An investigation was underway Monday morning after police in Ontario shot and killed a man armed with a shotgun at a Stater Bros grocery store.

Ontario police were called to the store, located at 1949 E. 4th Street, at about 9:45 p.m. Sunday after they said the suspect walked into the market and up and down aisles while holding a shotgun.

Ontario police said officers entered the store thinking it was an active shooter situation. When they made contact with the suspect, officers shot and struck him, but it was not known how many shots were fired.

The armed man, whose identity was not released, succumbed to his injuries. Police confirmed he did not shoot at officers or anyone inside the building, although the shotgun was in the suspect's hand when he was shot.

"Right now, we are in the beginning stages of trying to figure out who he was and what his actions were prior to coming into the store, as well as while he was inside of the store," said Detective Melissa Ramirez of the Ontario Police Department.

Any bets against the cops finding that they were justified? The courts just upheld the right for a cop to shoot and kill a homeowner, not suspected of any crime, who answers the cop pounding on the door in the middle of the night with a gun pointed at the floor. If that's a "good shooting", what isn't?

Depends how he was "holding" the shotty.  If it were slung around his body/shoulder, then probaby he would not have been shot.  But if he was holding it like how you normally would before you fire ,  then that's a different story...

Then there's the "just scrap" mentality. That's not fair either. A young punk can pick a scrap on an elderly person or someone smaller.
Law abiding citizen with a gun trumps this "just scrap" mentality.
