Police Chief Inveighs Against Open Carry

Herschel Smith comments on the police chief stating his reasons for opposing open carry legislation in South Carolina (one of the few states still outlawing open carry (of course joined by Hawaii)) and the devious motives and methods of the legislature.

These are the kinds of people and "arguments" that we have to counter here in Hawaii... if we had a legislature that gave a crap about logic, rationality, and evidence... which they don't. But still it's good to be informed just in case a miracle happens and they would consider reality-based "commonsense" actual evidence (as opposed to the hypothetical hyperbole of "wild west" "blood in the streets" over "minor driving incidents" etc.). As Smith points out, all the arguments made by the police chief are proven false simply by looking at the neighboring state, which is extremely similar in virtually every way, and yet they have no problems at all with open carry being legal. Just like with Hawaii, where the people here are apparently too immature, irrational, stupid, or something, to be allowed to lawfully exercise their Second Amendment-guaranteed right to bear arms. I've asked the entire legislature what it is about Hawaii citizens that makes them a danger to public safety when the citizens of 42 "shall issue" CCW states (including 12 permitless CCW carry states) turn out to be, in the reality of actual statistics far more law-abiding than cops. Not one single legislator responded to my question. I guess the answer is so obvious that they don't want to take the time to tell me. Yeah, the answer is obvious, and they don't want to publicize or be honest about the motivations for their actions/inactions.

Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook Inveighs Against South Carolina Open Carry

Excerpts:

Cop: "The right to bear arms is fundamental to our democracy, but [my emphasis} the sale, purchase, ownership and carrying of guns comes with great responsibility and use of common sense, and I firmly believe an open-carry law will significantly complicate police interactions with citizens, resulting in many unintended consequences."

Herschel Smith: "This entire line of argument is so full of shit I barely know where to begin.  There is a deeper problem here than just his argumentation, but I’ll get to that after I spend a few paragraphs fisking his invective."

"But lawmakers have no more right to dictate how we carry our weapons that they do to dictate whether we have them in the first pace.  All gun control laws are an infringement on our God-given rights to bear arms, and thus they are immoral."

Well studies have shown the average IQ of a police officer is only104, very slightly above average.  They also don't want people who are too smart.  If you have an IQ of 120 or higher, your chances of being hired as a police officer is very slim.

I can understand why they do not understand.  They don't have the necessary intellect.
