Thefts are reported to the police, and they never close. I've called 911 to report a theft, they just transfer your call to whatever department you need to talk to.

That's true, but is this something we need to tie up 911 operators for, and is it the best use of officers time?

Regardless, as a reminder, this bill is up for a hearing on Thursday. If you can be there and testify, great. If not, pen something and send it in. Heck, you can use the web portal and just "click" that you oppose the measure. Whatever way you do it, just do so.

All non emergency services here go through 911.

Don't expect stellar service if you have to call 911...  emergency or no.

You ever call 911? They ask "police, fire, or ambulance?" then they ask "emergency or non-emergency?".....or maybe its the other way around. But the point is they get it all sorted out and the response times are appropriate and they obviously do not take police away from a hostage situation to handle a stolen bicycle report. Besides, what other number is there to call when you need the police?

I think you're severely overestimating the number of emergencies, sure emergency situations happen everyday but it doesn't take up every second/minute/hour of the day, there is some downtime. 911 operators probably don't spend as much time on the phone as you think. I'm also pretty sure that the police spend way more time patrolling than they do responding to incidents.

Actually, we shouldn't be opposing this bill, we should be suggesting changes to it.  it also includes provisions PROTECTING gun owners from prosecution for negligent storage and whatnot when they report a stolen gun.
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

The only person who would get you prosecuted under the storage law is a minor under 16 who is authorized in your house who gets hold of your gun.  (Read: your kids)  So the only way it protects you is by allowing the DA to press felony charges for "stealing" a gun against your kid.  I'll pass on that protection, and the criminal penalties for failing to conduct proper inventories of my collection.
