Looking to build an AR10
« on: January 01, 2012, 02:22:00 PM »
I'm going to start an AR10 build. Do you guys have any advice on lowers and uppers?

Are you machining your own lower?

DPMS version seems to have more available parts/options.
Currently I am building a lightweight version of the LR308

I wanted to build one too but decided to forgo it after talking to the guys at OGC.  According to them not all uppers and lowers are interchangeable like with the AR15 platform.  You will need to do all your research to make sure what you want will fit together.

Start here: http://308ar.com/compatibility.htm

Most of the guys I hang out with have DPMS pattern rifles.

First decide on what it's intended purpose is for (hunting or target shooting). If you are just building a blaster or hunter you don't need it to be particularly accurate, then I'd go with a DPMS spec rifle as parts, mags, accessories are cheaper and more readily available.

If you want a target shooting rifle, then it's no fun shooting 2-3" groups on your best day. For ultimate accurate rifle I would use a Noveske N6 barrel, ArmaLite spec lower and go from there.

From my internet google-fu, the DPMS lr-308s seem to be pretty accurate and receive a decent amount of praise. No doubt if you want the best accuracy, a Noveske barrel would go a long way, but most say their DPMS will shoot MOA.

.308 PMAGs work in the DPMS platform, though. That's another plus of the DPMS platform.

I picked up a DPMS Panther LR308 from this forum a while back.  Put a BSA 6-24x40 mm Mil Dot Tactical Scope on it and went to KHSC.
It has a 24" SS Bull Barrel. After sighting it in I was shooting under 1" groups at 100 yards. (I'm a terrible shooter!)
Shooting out to the metal plates is too easy after that.
My only complaint is the weight. so building a lighter one now.
so as far as accuracy it is on target

Armalite AR-10T Carbine is the bomb.  I purchased it when Armalite first offered this model back in October of 1997.  Better to buy one complete than build.  After initial break in for the stainless barrel, got  3/8 to 1/2 inch clover-leaf groups benched with a 10 Power scope at 100 yds using 168 grain Open-tip Match reloads. Open sights are more fun!

Anyone heard anything about Mega Arms MA-10? Supposedly very interchangeable with many brands.

Everyone seems to love the Mega Arms MA-10 platform. It takes the DPMS/SR-25 style mags (read Magpul) which is nice. The only thing that's turned me off is the price. I think just the matched upper and lower receivers run close to a grand. For that price you can get a DPMS and spend the rest on some nice glass. Well, the MA-10 does look a lot nicer than the DPMS.

Take a look here for the compatibility.

I was hoping that with the surge in popularity in the .308 AR platform, that prices would start to drop. I can't believe that stripped lowers still cost $300+ when you can get an AR-15 lower for under $100. Well, maybe someday.

Thanks for the info guys, I've learned that unlike the AR15 there is no mil-spec for the AR10. Thus the incompatibility between manufacturers. Now I'm debating whether to build a gun with all Armalite parts or buy something else already build.

Thanks for the update. I haven't checked in a couple months and it looks like I'm behind on my info. I better go brush up and maybe buy something.

You should look into the 300 blackout.

I don't know why all the hype over .300 BLK. I guess if I had a silencer, that'd be something I'd look at, but then I'd also look at 9mm and short :D

I'd seriously look at what mags are compatible with your platform.  It would suck to build the gun and find out you need to spend $60 for each mag.

Hey E - do you notice a lot of difference in point of impact with your rate of fire up?  Heat soak into the cartridges enough to affect point of impact?
