Anyone have experience moving all their "stuff" from one island to another? Looking for  any information re: moving a bunch of firearms from Oahu to Hawaii island or Kauai. Any information, help, anecdotes, mo'olelo would be greatly appreciated.

Just moved from Oahu to big island last week. Paid about $400+ to ship my double cab Tacoma. Filled the bed (bought a cheap tonneau from Amazonbut$200) with personal items and filled the whole back seat and floor behind passenger seat up to the bottom of the windows also with personal stuff. Dropped truck off to young Bros on Friday, it sailed on Saturday, was available in Hilo on Tuesday, flew in and picked up on Wednesday. All I had with me on the flight were a laptop bag filled with personal items and another carry on filled with jewelry and other important docs. I had to call Hawaiian the night before to let them know I would be checking guns. I brought an M4 and a Ruger 10/22 both in one hard case. Initially I had under 11 lbs of ammo per my interpretation of Hawaiian airlines that it could be packed into the same case as the guns. But as I talked to the Hawaiian airlines rep who was obviously in the Philippines reading from a script, I decided not to take a chance and left my ammo on Oahu at my parents place. I didn't want to spend the money to ship the ammo separately in another checked bag. As far as our other belongings ( I have a wife and 2 daughters 4 and we sold what other belongings we had that didn't fit in the truck and 2 checked bags per person. We came here with the intentions of starting fresh. Lessons learned, prioritize what you are going to ship. We regret not bringing some things because we had to rebuy them here and the costs are starting to add up. You should research how much it will cost to ship a pallet or a container.

It cost me over $3,000 per U-box to ship from Vegas to here. We got rid of 2/3 of our stuff before we left and ended up with three U-boxes. It was a job relocation so it was all tax deduction.

Attached is a sample from their website. You can use their trailer to tow it to the Uhaul near the airport or hire a mover to transport it for you.

Hey long time no see.

When I moved from Oahu to the BI in 2014, it was $705 to ship a 20 ft container, which included the rental of the container from YB.  Island Movers would bring the container to my home in Kailua, pick it up, take it to YB, pick it up in Hilo and deliver it to my new home 30 miles away and pick it up after we were done unloading for $574.

My experience seven years ago was like Mikeyd's.  Loaded out cars with as much stuff as possible, has the rest packed up.  Full house of stuff, had to get rid of some furniture for a smaller house.

Guns went into a Pelican case and locked it in the safe.

Could have carried it over on the plane, but we had two cats as carry on and did not need more to deal with at the counter.

IIRC, the carrier just wanted the serial numbers.  Never asked to see them or where they were in the stuff.

I just put mine in tbe middle of the container along with a little over 18,000 rds of ammo in ammo cans.

Me too, except I only had a contained spam can of ammo. Of course it was only two Russian rifles and not thousands and thousands worth of rifles.

I only have a few guns, as I am not a gun collector and the ones I do have I shoot on a regular basis.  One AR15, two .22 rifles, one .22 pistol and a Glock 19.  I try to use my money to acquire more ammo instead of buying guns that I will never or hardly shoot.  I have a friend here that has about 70 guns, only 3 he uses on a regular basis and not even 1000 rounds of ammo.  I really worry when my ammo supply drops below 10,000.

I swore I would stick with 3 calibers, .308, .45 ACP, and 12 Ga.  Somehow a .223 managed to sneak in when it looked like the Butcher of Benghazi would win.

A small collection of .25 ACP and .380 for stuff left by wife's parents after they passed on.
