Was shopping around for ‘renter’s policies” and with All State I was able to find that they cover $2,000.00 in firearms from theft. More if you opt for specific coverage.
All homeowners and renters policies have limits on high value items. That includes jewelry, artwork, computer equipment/software, and firearms. You can purchase additional supplemental insurance on your policy called "riders," "floaters,' or "personal property schedule."
In my experience, riders are extremely overpriced for the amount of coverage. For example, I insured my and my wife's Rolex watches with a combined purchase price of $11,000. An All State homeowners rider to cover that was $425/year. In just 12 years, I'd have paid half the value of the watches in premiums. If the value depreciates, as used watches tend to, it may have only taken about 8 years to pay in half the total value, or the full value of one watch.
So, it really depends on the chances of suffering a loss. Chances are, only one of the watches would have been stolen or lost, not both. So in 8-12 years, one lost or stolen watch would get us about even on the premiums spent. I could just as easily have put that money in the bank and paid for another watch out-of-pocket.
The same calculations applied to my gun collection (before the stripper stole everything). NRA provides me $2500 of firearm insurance free with my lifetime membership. Their additional firearm insurance rates are much cheaper than a homeowners rider from State Farm, at least in my case.
Do some more shopping around and do price comparisons. If you install an alarm system, cameras, or other security measures to help protect the firearms, your renters insurance company will give you about 10% off your entire policy, which might make it cheap enough to compete with other options.
Try Googling for firearm coverage rate comparisons. Good luck!
