I am thinking about making handle slabs for the 1911 but I am coming across an issue. The 1911s seem to use a certain type of screw that needs a flat step in the material to rest on. I am having a little trouble finding the right counterbore bit to drill the same hole to match standard 1911 screws. My thought was to use flat heads that have a tapered neck. These are very common in have drill bits with countersink on them.

So my question is whether this would be frowned upon or whether 1911 lovers don't care as long as there is a set of screws to hold the grips properly. There are so many options with the standard screws so maybe I will just try to search high and low for the  special bit.

you might be able to get away with a square end mill bit to make the flat step.  square end mill bits are pretty cheap and easy to find
