Murder in Rental

Every time there is some kind of event like the one last night, the wife gets into "training mode".  She ask me what does she do and how to do it.  The murder drilled more caution into her brain.  She did think that I'm paranoid when I  take the gun with me to the toilet and kitchen.  But recent events, not only last night has made her more aware.

1) This can happen to anyone and anytime so be prepared.  We don't know how they got in (kicked door in, snuck in, was already inside, etc...)
2) Why the gun is always in arms reach and not left far away.  If someone kicks the door in, she wouldn't have time to run to where the gun is. (Small apartment)
3) Exercise your right to remain silent until you speak to an attorney (Have NRA Carry Guard card with you and follow instructions on card)
4) What to do if gun doesn't go bang.  (Tap rack)

She is getting better at being ready.  A few months ago, I was at the HDF range day and took all the guns with me.  She called me saying there was a druggy in front of our place yelling at the air and pacing.  She asked where are the guns, because the safe is empty.  Told her it's with me.  This scared her because she didn't have the best tool to defend herself if needed.  Since then, I always leave 1 gun at home.

7 shot 38 special.  If the gun doesn't go bang, keep pulling the trigger.  There may not be time to mess with the slide, reracking,  fooling with the safety, etc.

Regarding guns - everyone is different, but I think there should be a gun that is "her gun".   Shes most familiar with this one and it only leaves the home if she goes to the range

Living in Hawaii, and particularly my neighborhood that I live in, we tend to generally feel "safe". I am not so naive that I'm not also prepared. I won't go into details how prepared I am on a public forum though.

This kind of things happening makes it all the more important for us to have CCW. We had at least 2 murders in the last week. Honolulu is a major US city. Along with that comes the criminal problems of one. Add the heavy drug use and homeless problem, we need the means to protect ourselves and our loved ones. When will we start removing these idiot politicians out of office?

Purely from observation, I see the police and judicial agencies here as 100% enabling chronic druggies.  The criminals get arrested 50, 100, 150 times, and are still on the streets.  The crimes they commit are normally property crimes like breaking into cars, burglary and petty theft.  The system doesn't seem to care about those crimes.  Nobody got hurt.   :wtf:

Only when the chronic finally hurts or kills someone do we hear about them getting put in jail.  Mind-boggling.

This exact scenario played out with a coworker's mother-in-law, with a little help from a church whose members kept bailing the bad guy out time after time until he tried to murder the mother-in-law.
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

people in hawaii are treated as disposable by hpd.  they can't or wont do anything until someone get seriously hurt or killed.  Then they look for the guy, and write a cute report.   that's why ccw is so important.  to give the average law abiding citizen the option to defend themselves if they choose.  If you choose not to carry, that's cool no one is making you.  But don't take away from someone's right to carry based on your choice.

And the fact that hpd refuses to issue any concealed carry permits also means that they were responsible for many assaults and killings on the island that may not had occurred if the individual was allowed to carry and chose to carry in self defense

The criminals committing these property crimes are getting more and more brazen. ----- It will get far worse before it gets better, IF it even gets better.

Those two that were arrested for the North Shore murder has a video circulating on social media. They were clearly high AF on that video.

Yup thunder ranch. Clint smith is super funny. "If ET lands on my front yard, im telling him 1 time and 1 time only to drop the ray gun, then im shooting him."

WML maybe, next gift idea. Good thing about the wife being into guns is it makes xmas, vday, bday easier.

This kind of stuff is hitting closer to home for me, literally.  I live in a relatively secure condo.  There's the occasional warning of someone getting let in and a bike getting stolen and such.  Have been starting to notice more and more.  Last week, a couple of guys got in and broke into the manager's office in the lobby and stole a bunch of stuff.  Stoke a moped and a car from the parking garage.  If they are in the lobby, they have free access to most of the building.  People get lulled into a "it can't happen to me" attitude.  Well, it can happen.  I'm not saying that I'm gonna go to the "I'm always on red" thinking, but just saying that this is a problem that is only going to get worse.

ETA: Friends often ask me why I train, both with firearms and other elements to defend myself.  They joke if I am preparing for the zombie apocalypse.  Well, for one thing, I flat out enjoy shooting and training.  I would do those even if I wasn't concerned about self defense.  Besides that, it's something that I'd rather have and not need it than to need it and not have it.
