Florida about to pass gun control
« on: March 07, 2018, 10:04:15 PM »
First laws being passed for gun control at the state level since recent events.  Unless the governor vetoes it:

Increased firearm purchase age to 21
3 day waiting period for all firearms, unless you have a carry license
Ban of rate increasing devices
Confiscation of guns if you are deemed a risk to yourself or others

Florida is in for a fight.

So the Governor ended up signing it.

HOWEVER

The NRA has filed a lawsuit against the state of Florida to fight it.  Finally the NRA is using their power in recent events.  Join them, its cheaper than you think.

Current annual membership is $30. I think we’ve all blown that much on dumber stuff than the NRA.  Hearing Florida was immediately sued assured me my membership was money well spent.

They know they can’t get it done on the national level.

So instead, state by state, targeting certain groups (in this case 18-20 year olds.

Slippery slope.

The lawsuit will eventually end up before SCOTUS.  This interests me in that I'm trying to get HPD to register long guns for those under 21.

NRA sues Florida to block part of new gun law

The NRA argues people who are 18 years old are considered adults "for almost all purposes and certainly for the purposes of the exercise of fundamental constitutional rights."

Hopefully they the suit is against all aspects of the law and not just the age requirement.  However, it will be interesting to see if the State brings up Hawaii's law of having to be 21 years of age to purchase a firearm and use it as an example.  And then if it is ruled invalid, what does that say about Hawaii's law.

You couldn't write a script with this crap because people would say it's too stereotyped and hackneyed... but here it is in reality... just as everyone with half a brain could have predicted, on time and repeated word for word:

Dem Rep Deutch: Gun Bill Florida Signed ‘Merely the Beginning’ of the Response to Parkland

“This legislation in Florida that the governor just signed is a good first step. But the NRA shouldn’t think, the gun lobby shouldn’t think that this is the end of the response to what happened in Parkland. This is merely the beginning.”

Someone should tell the florida law makers to look up the ages of all mass shooters.
