That was my guess.

Adjustable gas systems are intended for two things AFAIK: adding/removing suppressors, and differences in ammo used.

By popular definition of a battle rifle being a 308,
I would go with a PTR91/G3 or whatever variant of the same thing, except with Spuhr furniture, picatinny rail with optic of choice.
Has significantly less recoil and significantly lighter in weight, slick, all  while maintaining unsurpassed reliability.
