Police said the shootout happened about 2:45 p.m. Friday, when officers stopped a Toyota 4Runner at a South Point checkpoint, which had been set up after police got a tip that Waiki was in the area.

Hawaii Police Department Maj. Robert Wagner told Hawaii News Now that there were five people in the SUV: A male driver, three women and Waiki.

But Waiki was "hidden in the very back of the 4Runner, underneath a blanket," Wagner said.

"The officer checked the very back area of that vehicle, opened up that hatch there, and then Waiki actually emerged and shot the officer," Wagner said. "The members of the SRT unit exchanged fire, killing Waiki at that location."

He added that one of the women in the SUV was also shot. The three others in the vehicle were arrested on hindering prosecution charges and were taken to the Kona police station.

The wounded officer has been with the Hawaii Police Department for 12 years. Wagner said he's a patrol sergeant in Puna, but also a member of the Special Response Team.

Reports said officer shot is stable and just heard on the news the Big Island Mayor announced “officer will be OK”.

Was this clown not convicted of multiple felonies? One of them a firearm offense AFTER his first felony conviction?

Had the laws in place been enforced, one Officer would still be alive and another not wounded.
Whatever happened to the "Felon in Possession" charges that would have prevented all of this?

You have to sit down and think.  Stupid laws passed by stupid people.  This state is full of them.
Best bet is to figure out how to protect yourself from them.  I worry about the Government and criminals equally.
They both represent the biggest threat to my health, safety, and welfare that I face daily.
