Could the M9 be phased out for political reasons?

Just for giggles.

1911-WW1, WWII, Korea, Vietnam
M9-Op Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom

So that's a score of 4-3.  And talking about the sidearm regular soldiers use, SF not counted.

I'm sure there's some politics involved with selecting a firearm that carries a multi-million dollar contract

Every contract I've been involved with had a cloud of politics around it. Without political support, you can't get funding.

The biggest problem with acceptance testing is you're stuck with the test results and preferences of the evaluators at the time. 2-3 years later, when the product is in full use, the new management scratches their heads over why anyone would ever accept that prototype.  They pretend the acceptance process is objective and based on detailed requirements.  In reality, the requirements are ambiguous, incomplete, and poorly documented.  The people writing the requirements tend to gravitate toward products already in use.  That stifles innovation and improvements.

We've given users a totally blank slate to create a system they want to do their jobs, and we got 'Make it do 'this function' like system X does it."

Users are not designers.

the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

I own a few pistols.
I never had to use a pistol in a war situation.
Thank God!
In war I would want a rifle with a "safari sling"
My Elk hunting gun is a M1A with a Safari sling.
That would be my war gun.
For a pistol I prefer a PPK for CC self protection.
But if I were a cop or a soldier I'd want a SIG
de-cocker 9 mm.
My M1911A stays at home.
Between that and a shot gun
home is well protected.
Guns are tools. select the best one for
the work that needs to be done.
