Rush Limbaugh receives Presidential Medal of Freedom
« on: February 05, 2020, 12:35:41 AM »
Rush Limbaugh was presented with the highest civilian honor during the State of the Union address. Milania Trump was seated next to him and helped make the presentation.

This was in part due to Rush announcing he is being treated for stage 4 lung cancer.  He made the announcement this week to give his audience the reason he may not be on the air full time as he undergoes treatment and fights the effects.

Rush has been a voice in the wilderness for conservatives for over 3 decades.  At 69, this situation doesn't offer much hope.  Having said that, this is the man who lost his hearing completely and then regained it through cochlear implants.

Never count Rush out.

I was stunned when I heard this. I am sorry he has cancer and only wish him the best and I hope he can recover from this. If he is not able to recover from this, he will be missed.

Over the years I have gone from listening to Rush to being pissed at him to forgiving him for the insults over the years. He has changed his tune a bit towards those like me. I recently started listening to him again. He is good friends with the President. I understand why he received the award. He deserves it. Just know he has not always been the saint some make him out to be.

I don't think anyone worships Rush or believes him to be a saint.

I do believe AM radio would have been dismantled long ago if not for shows like his and Hannity's.

I stopped listening to him a long time ago mainly because I couldn't listen at work (had to be mobile), and at one point, I was getting physically ill with all the BS the Liberals were causing, and there was nothing listening everyday was going to fix.  Stepping away for a break kept my ulcers at bay.

I watched his TV show when I could, mainly because it was in the evening.

Rush is like Trump.  He says what HE thinks (not what he thinks we want to hear), and it just so happens a lot of people listening are saying, "Hell, yeah!" at their radios.  He sounds like what I'm thinking.

Rush has always professed to be an entertainer, not a political leader.  However, I believe he's kept the GOP and conservative movements alive through some very dark times.

It's as if the election, and soon-to-be reelection, of Donald Trump signals and end to our need for a voice like Rush's.  His job is done.  Time for someone else to pick up the mantle and carry it on.

I listen to Rush every day.  First heard him in the 80's.
I know where Rio Linda is as I was stationed at McCellan AFB.
which forms the southern border of Rio Linda.
I'm basically a Libertarian who believes in a strong military,
so most of his production resonates with me.
My father died from a metastasized Lung cancer so I know
what that is like.  I still remember the smell of an impending death.
Hopefully Rush avoids that. I'd like to see everybody avoid that kind
of death.
Bottom line is nobody gets out of here alive.  You do the best with
the time you have, and trust in God, if you believe in, God,
for the hereafter.
Like Rush I won't Proselytize.

My father died of Mesothelioma. He worked for Johns Manville with asbestos. The doctors did everything they could for as long as they could. But he decided to cut his losses and denied treatment. He died a short time later.

I have been exposed to asbestos. It has been 30+ years since my exposure. Hopefully I won’t die from asbestosis or Mesothelioma like my father. It was not pleasant watching him die. But it was fairly quick after he started suffering.

Was never a fan of Rush but he was there before lots of the other conservative hosts I do listen to. He has said a lot controversial stuff (some quite bad) over the years and was kind of a shock jock but also been a voice for conservatives for a long time.

Not sure why warrants the presidential medal of freedom though

Did you miss the word "Presidential" in the name of the medal?  The President gets to select the recipients.  It's not a competition or automatic award if you do "X".

Obama presented the medal to:

Joe Biden -- name one accomplishment as VP
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar -- Basketball, movie actor and "outspoken social justice advocate" apparently is enough to qualify
Elouise Cobell (Posthumus) -- won a lawsuit for native americans
Ellen DeGeneres -- told everyone she's a Lesbian
Robert De Niro -- Said nasty words about Trump
Tom Hanks -- actor and director who advocates for social and environmental justice, whatever "environmental justice" entails.

So, instead of asking why Limbaugh deserves the medal, try doing some research.  Obama awarded the same honor, the HIGHEST HONOR a president can bestow on a civilian, to 21 people.

I think if you compare Rush Limbaugh's life and the impact he's had on this nation, his achievements put the majority of Obama's selectees to shame.

I was going to comment to EEF, but I bailed.
You did a far better response than I had typed in.

Thank you.

I hate when people form opinions based on emotions, as EEF obviously did with his anti-Limbaugh comments.

I'm wondering if EEF has even listened to an entire 3 hour Rush show.  I highly doubt it.

I never said I agreed with every medal that Obama gave out. There is a lot to criticize there as well, but does that mean I can't criticize this decision as well? Oh sorry, I forgot, criticizing Trump triggers you.

The only one her clouded by emotions is you.

You didn't criticize.  You admitted you don't know anything about the medal.

Rush singlehandedly created and perfected the talk radio format that is so popular on AM/FM radio today. If it were not for his efforts I doubt that talk radio would not exist and would not be as wildly popular as it is.

I wrote something similar in response to some criticism of Rush receiving the award on a different social media platform. I was brutally attacked by numerous people accusing me of trying to deceive by not adding the word “Conservative” in front of “Talk Radio”. I informed them that the same format was tried and used by numerous liberal and progressive talk radio shows all over the country. It is no ones fault that liberal and progressive talk radio never caught on like conservative talk radio has. Rush created and perfected the format which does not favor conservative nor liberal/progressive talk. It is just that liberal/progressive talk is not popular like conservative talk is. Liberal/progressive talk shows are now mostly podcasts and are not that popular. There are much more popular podcasts that are put out by conservative/Libertarian/Republican news outlets and individuals.

I’m not a big fan of presidents using the freedom award as a gift to friends/family/elites as recognition for their familiarity with the president. It dilutes the meaning of the award. However, in this case Rush deserves this award for his work in developing and perfecting the talk radio format that has become so wildly popular with such a large and broad swath of the US population. It has opened up the opportunities for other shows to also be wildly popular. The timing of the award is due to Rush’s recent health issues. It doesn’t matter when he receives it, what matters is if he deserves it. Which he does deserve it. At least he received it before he dies as Rush took the award as the honor that it is.

Rush went on a tear many years ago blasting atheists and agnostics as supporting secular politics which allows attacks on religion that is a big cause of the problems we face here in the US. I am an atheist that supports religion (For others, not myself) and supports compromise and protections in our government between religious rights and our laws. I don’t believe in creating protected classes. But I agree we need to protect freedom of religion. This is what I personally had against Rush. He has since calmed down his rhetoric and I think he realized he was alienating a portion of his listeners since he has stopped his attacks on us/me. Rush also used to have a drug problem and I believe he also cheated on his first wife. He used to rail against drug users and being religious himself would talk against those who don’t keep their marriage vows. All of this goes to his credibility. He has changed a lot over the years. He no longer talks like he is holier than thou. He has certainly become humble in his old age. This is why I decided to start listening to him again. Everyone deserves forgiveness. And he deserves the award.

Obama got the Nobel Peace Prize so it is pretty obvious that whatever awards are getting thrown around these days do not mean anything. Giving rush the medal was another master troll maneuver. Trump knows all he has to do is make angry progressives spray some foam out of their mouths and his base gets more solidified.

If you look at the things Trump uses as troll bait, they are normally issues that have ZERO to do with anything important to most people.  He tosses some red meat to the rabid Left, and they are so busy hungrily pouncing on it, they are distracted from the important things Trump is busy accomplishing.

Too many examples to list.  You can often tell it's happening when the media says Trump said something bad on Twitter.  By the time that storm blows over, Trump has announced one or more Executive Orders were signed.
