Pistol Safe/Storage?
« on: April 12, 2020, 02:56:43 PM »
Aloha guys. Any recommendations for a small safe for maybe 2 pistols and some magazines? Live in a condo, so a full size gun safe is not an option at the moment.  I was looking at the Fort Knox ones, but have some Home Depot store credit, so then started looking at the Sentry ones.If anyone has any better suggestions, I would appreciate it. Bonus points for someone who carries it locally to support small business. Thanks!

I have a GV2000 and it fits two handguns with mags.  It is easy to hide and would be good enough for what you need.

Pricing may vary but I have seen them go for a little over $100 to $150 online.  A few local shops have had them on hand but hit or miss.  I also looked at the Fort Knox but felt this was a better option for a small storage box and something to keep near my bed.

Are you interested in an actual pistol SAFE or just something to deter casual unauthorized access?

Depending on how much you are willing & able to spend, there are some out there that are made of the same, or better, steel as long gun safes.  They have a variety of locking mechanisms, too.

I went with FAS1 safes.  I have 3, all in different rooms.  They added the key lock option a couple of years ago, so I ordered one of them as my third.

From what I can tell, they are in the same class as some of the Fort Knox models, but with more size and feature options.

The owner/manufacturer works with you on shipping, since HI is way more expensive (these things are H-E-A-V-Y).  All of mine were purchased during one of his holiday promos, which originally saved me the shipping cost.  Unfortunately, shipping has gone up, so now it's a bit more overall to ship here.

If you're curious, try signing up for his promo emails.  Then you can see what discounts roll around.  He also posts to FB and Twitter, it you'd rather just subscribe there.

Here's a pic of my bedroom safe:

You can position the safe vertically or horizontally as long as you have clearance for the lid.  Holster presents the pistol upon opening with the aid of some REALLY STRONG hydraulic struts, and the safe and holster sizes can be selected for your handgun sizes.

If you buy your safe one size or more larger than you need for your HD pistol, you'll have room for extra mags, another pistol or two, valuables, etc.  I put extra mags in mine without having to "upsize."

How is the biometric holding up? I like the simplicity of the Simplex style locks, but the biometric ones seems to be a better value lol

Now that I think about it, its probably going to be mostly used to deter unauthorized access, and mostly from my little one. I've also only had a Glock 17 that I've been storing in its factory case, with no issues. Just picked up a Sig P365, and after my initial cleaning and storing, it seems the eggshell foam in the Sig case seemed to have pulled oil out of the slide and made a mess. I'm hoping storing in a safe with maybe some silica packets will help with this?

What model do you have? Size wise it looks good if I can orient it horizontally. I'll send them an email to try and work on shipping. Thanks

I actually bought the one without.  Just has the buttons that look like finger tips.  So far so good. Runs off 9v and has backup key just in case.

I have 2 of the regular FAS1 sizes, and one Magnum XL -- the XL was on a promo, and I wanted to try out my .357 S&W 686 6".

The compact is a nice version, especially if you'd like the lid to open at 90 degrees for better access from above.

They can be mounted in any orientation and direction.  So, in a car, it could be installed like a center console, with the lid going up & back.  Or it can be under a bed horizontally with the lid opening so the gun's grip is facing away for both in-bed and next-to-bed access.  You have to drill your own holes, so the location is 100% up to you.

The hydraulics are so strong, there's no problem with the lid opening in any orientation.
