Anybody here do flooring?
« on: August 28, 2020, 02:24:38 PM »
I’m gonna start my floor remodel this week since I’m out of work for two weeks now. I’m going to do a floating floor with vinyl click-in type planks. I have carpet now and I lifted a corner to check the subfloor and it looks like someone skimmed the plywood with, I’m guessing, some sort of self leveling mud compound. It’s not leveling concrete because I can scratch it like Sheetrock. Should I scrape that off or should I just lay the floor over that with some moisture barrier underlayment?

"I’m going to do a floating floor with vinyl click-in type planks"
if you own the house and intend to keep it
don't use that crap it will likely buckle in our humidity.
I've done wood( bamboo) floors in two houses that I both
glued and brad nailed into the Plywood sub-floor.
I used to install decks and soles in boats.  Use a mechanical and glue
connection and it will last in a humid environment.

Should be OK if the white-ish compound hasn’t cracked.
Humidity will affect the wood subfloor more than the leveler. And leveler will crack if the sub-floor expands too much.
Plank vinyl is a stable product so you should be ok.
Just leave the small gaps around the edges and either install base molding or quarter rounds around the perimeter.
Underlayment /moisture barrier is preferable.
And check the floor for level all over at various places. Fill any low spots.

I think Groveler might think your talking about laminate.

The concrete base in my living room has noticeable dips. When I had laminate, used this antibacterial layer/sheeting that sort of leveled things off. At least a bit. Fridge water mine busted and laminate got wet and replaced with vinyl. Was recommended to go without the layer/sheeting. It’s not bad, but because the vinyl is thinner and more flexible than the laminate, I notice the slight dips more. Not bad, but noticeable.

If you have the time and inclination this is the way to go in my opinion. You can dye it for different looks, it is soft on the feet while still offering some grip, and the best part is repairs are ridiculously easy. When it gets scratched up and cloudy, hit it with the sander and throw on another layer.

Put it right on top of the leveler because it creates its own structure. It might settle, but the more layers you put on the better and stronger it gets.

It that's gypcrete on the floor, be careful of the quality/durability of that original layer. . .

I used vinyl flooring from HD.  Came with a 25 year warranty and was very easy to lay.  In fact my wife did this whole floor in our Kailua house.  A lot of people thought it was real wood.

Sorry the pictures came out sidewards.

Used to be very familiar with different kinds of flooring, especially in the Far East, during my 20+ years in the Navy. Always got a real up close look at them when I woke up in some bar after a night of some hard “steaming” ........ :shake:  :D
