I wonder what the whole story behind the M16A1 is.

I think it was a typo, more like 23k( not that it matters how much ammo someone has)

I wonder about the unregistered weapons, what if they were pre 94? 

It's in today's paper, he had 23,000 rounds of ammo.

It's not surprising that they describe his stuff as a "cache" and not as a "collection." 

He also is alleged to have grabbed a .308 rifle and locked himself in a bathroom when ATF agents came to his house.

It was kind of interesting to note the details made available in the article--the M-16A1 was described as having "US Property" markings, the rifle he grabbed was described as a ".308 rifle with a 10 round magazine," the difference between semi-automatic and full-automatic functioning was briefly explained, details were given about his former FFL, etc.  IMO that's better than "machine gun," "assault rifle," "guns," etc.  This writer apparently has some familiarity with firearms, or at least he/she paid attention to the source(s) of information.

According to the article, the M-16A1 was purchased from a "friend" on Kauai that so far Hamura has refused to identify.  The article also noted that the rifle was not reported as stolen or missing.

Really interesting story here. 

Hamura Saimin from what I was led to believe is no longer owned by the Hamura's.  I thought they had sold it over a year ago, most likely longer.

From the way the article reads it seems nothing will happen regarding the 10 rifles/20 handguns...........so charges for the unregistered stuff?  (definitely trouble for the M16A1, one would think it would be rather easy to find out what the story is on that rifle unless he was stupid enough to deface the S/N)

A 51-year-old U.S. Postal Service worker on Kauai is in federal custody on charges that he possessed a fully automatic rifle and used someone else’s firearms license to order a firearm from the mainland without the other person’s permission.

Troy Haruki Hamura, of Lihue, appeared in federal court Thursday afternoon wearing a white prison jump suit.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said when its agents went to Hamura’s home last month to question him on the purchase of the firearm he ordered from the mainland, Hamura turned over to them 19 unregistered firearms, including the automatic rifle, an M-16A1.

When federal agents went back to the home Wednesday to execute a search warrant, they recovered 10 rifles and 20 handguns, all registered to Hamura, and 23 rounds of ammunition, Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracy Hino said in court this afternoon.

Hamura is not charged with any crimes involving the 30 firearms and ammunition.

The court’s pretrial services recommended releasing Hamura on bond pending a determination of probable cause on the charges.

Defense lawyer Keith Shigetomi said Hamura will work in his family’s business. His family runs Hamura Saimin Stand in Lihue.

Having "unregistered" rifles is not illegal.

As long as they were acquired before Hawaii decided to start registering them (1994 I believe)

The M16 on the other hand, is not legal to possess.
