There has been a lot of criticism about how the situation at the Capitol was handled on Wednesday. Some are saying that because the majority of the protesters were white, they were not treated as violently or forcefully as how the BLM protestors were treated in the past summer and DC protests.
Lebron James mentioned we really live in 2 Americas. It is being echoed by many other people and media outlets also in one form or another.
Is it really as simple as that? Because the MAGA protesters were mostly white and the BLM protesters were mostly Black?
Could there be other factors that contributed to how things were handled on Wednesday?
How about the demeaner of the crowd? Were they passive? Aggressive? It seems that the majority were just milling about on Wednesday, it didn't seem to be much organized or aggressive initially.
Possibility of under planning or poor planning as to what to expect from the crowd? No back up personnel in case it got out of hand? Were the Capitol Police understaffed for the task? Were they even trained enough or experienced enough to do the job?
Did they let the crowd through the gates fearing if they didn't it would escalate? I can see the logic there, being that the crowd appeared passive. It was supposed to be after all, a peaceful protest.
So, if everything remained exactly the same on Wednesday except that the majority of the protesters were Black, would it have the same outcome?
I say nothing much would have changed. The demeaner of the crowd will dictate how the cops handle the situation. The attitude, aggressiveness, demeanor, and organization of the crowd is what the police will monitor when deciding how to maintain order.
Unfortunately, a very small number of instigators is what triggered the violence. The majority of those storming the capitol were just looky loos, curious followers, and selfie junkies.
I think the other protests that happened during the summer and at DC with BLM turned more forceful and violent because of again, the Demeanor of the crowd. Also the demographics. If the protesters are tying up freeways and streets and burning and looting, WTF do you expect?
I'm open to learning and seeing other perspectives so please share your take on this subject. I don't think the people at the capitol were treated differently, but I've never been up close and experienced any of these protests, only what I see on reported media. I do see however, the difference in crowd attitude between the summer protests and the Capitol protests.
There are real arguments as to the subject of if we are living in 2 Americas. But in the case of just how protests are handled by law enforcement, I don't think so.
