Really? He hasn't been paying attention. Letting people, especially teens, get away with these crimes is the reason crime rates are so high now.
"...five-year jail, and $5000 fine," would be a better lesson -- not, "apologize, and you get to skate.'
He really owes the victim more than he knows. If this were my kid, and the charges were not filed, i'd have him over at that man's house every single day after school and on weekends to take care of whatever needed doing. i'm sure he could use a few rooms painted, some landscaping done -- maybe even a car waxed, a deck sanded or fence painted?
