Ko'olau the Leper; folk hero?
« on: February 21, 2024, 08:13:36 PM »
Does Ko'olau have any sort of status or reverence as a folk hero in Hawaii?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leper_War_on_Kaua%CA%BBi

Seems to me like a strong anti-authoritarian, anti-colonial, pro-independence, pro-Hawaiian, pro-gun type of story.

I've always been surprised that I don't see his name invoked more often.

There is a movie about it. "The Wind and the Reckoning" with Jason Scott Lee.

Also there is a Monument in Kalaupapa that is seeking funds to be built. I have a Great Grandmother that was sent there. Valerie Monsoon can help if you're looking for information on any relatives that was sent there.

I was not aware of this history.
I just started to get interested in the 1924 and 1938 sugar plantation incidents.
What, Me Worry?

Have you seen the film? My understanding is that they've shown it in a few festivals but are still looking for a distributor.

What is the monument in Kalaupapa going to look like?

That's interesting. Is the intention of the monument to be a tourist draw?

I walked down the switchbacks a couple years before the plague and I'm glad that I did when I could. Really interesting place, but I couldn't hazard a guess as to what the residents want to happen with the place or what it'll look like in the future.

Just did a post about him in response to SB3196.

Most Hawaiians (outside of Kaua'i) don't know who he is Why? Because it doesn't fit the narrative of Hawaiians "living with Aloha" and abstaining from actual revolutionary ideals, a predominant perspective pushed in Hawaiian studies programs. If you follow the trend, you'll quickly see that modern Hawaiian revolutionary perspectives (as they are taught) suggest complaining until the government or other entities concede inches after they take miles, upon which we are supposed to consider it a "win".

It could also be that unlike Robert Wilcox, who led two failed rebellions against the kingdom (to restore the pre-1887 Constitution) and the Republic of Hawai'i, Ko'olau was technically successful in resisting the then Provisional Government's attempt at forced relocation.

Can't have Hawaiians being inspired by a kupuna who fought against a tyrannical government with his rifle and won, in a sense. Not good for business.

Ancient Hawaiian history has many examples of amazing people and events.
The recent history of Hawaii is not so great, it is more like a horrible tragedy.
I am afraid that things are about to get even worse.
