Curious....would you order this at Zippy's?
« on: June 12, 2024, 02:21:28 PM »
Went to Zippy's yesterday with wife.  Looked at the menu and saw that Oxtail soup is $28.00!!! :o

Would you order it?  I wouldn't.

Back in the 80's Diner's Drive in had oxtail soup for $4.50.

Used to buy 2 and pig out.

edited to add:  could be wrong but it might have been $3.50

Nope.

I went to zips on national donut day.
Two (2) flaky glazed donuts were more than $8.

Having not been raised my whole life in Hawaii, I admit there's probably more to Zippy's than the food.  Kind of like being raised going to McD's after sporting events and band competitions.  Association is a strong emotional influence.

I kept hearing about Zippy's being one of the most must-experience island restaurants.

Not only do I find the quality of the food to be about  as good as the average cafeteria food on the mainland, the service at every Zippy's is in most of my visits anything but.

So, the answer to the topic's question for me is obviously "no."  Who goes to Zippy's for oxtail soup specifically?  If it's like their chili, I don't think it's going to be all that compared with other offerings around the island.

I guess it's a similar phenomenon to Waffle House.  It's more of an institution than a great place to eat.  I've enjoyed my share of Waffle House meals, but it's nothing I'd pay extra for.

Of course, this is just my opinion.

AT $28 it should be a really BIG bowl, but I know it will not be.

It's supply and demand, limited by ox's only having one tail.

Need to genetically modify them to grow two tails so the soup gets cheaper.

I bet before ox-tail became extremely popular, you couldn't give them away.

I also agree that Zippy's is nothing special.  I think it's appeal is it's extensive menu for families that have different tastes.

But even that is not like before.  Limited menu items when I go anyway.  But still has variety to satisfy most tastes.

I think my wife and I go there because sometimes she likes to eat breakfast food while I like to eat dinner food.  You can get them there.  Even at 2 in the afternoon.

$28 for oxtail and I keep thinking about this celebrity.  Can't remember his name but what he said is hilarious yet a bit profound.

He said he don't mind eating the small oxtail pieces but get a little queasy when he sees the very large pieces.  Said he knows that piece was closer to the......you know what.
