Group eating places
« on: June 20, 2024, 07:37:33 AM »
What are some good places to eat at for small get togethers or informal meetings?  Anyplace in Hawaii.  For future reference.

Requirements
1.  10 to 20 people
2.  Has meal options under $30 a person (incl tip and parking)
3.  Convenient parking
4.  Quiet for a conversation, not too busy
5.  Serves alcohol
6.  Preferable CCW allowed.

Some places I've used before...
Ruby Tuesdays - Moanalua
Chilis (Aiea location closed)
Spaghetti factory - aloha tower
Coconut Grill - Hilo
Kuhio Grill - Hilo
Tantes Island Cuisine - Kahului

Others Suggested
Big City Diner - Pearlridge & Waipio
Bravo - Pearlridge
Beerlab - Pearlridge

I was going to suggest KHSC's park and either cater or pot luck.  But you won't be able to do #5. :(

Yeah, hard to find places to accommodate large parties yet provide a somewhat quiet venue to hold informal meetings.

Big City Diner in Waipio used to accommodate my family get togethers that usually is about 14-18 people and we request to be seated outside.  Sometimes the service gets strained when they are busy.  Best is afternoon late lunch meetings.  Or after the dinner 7-8:30 time slot and then just stay till closing, lol!

Free parking is ample but restaurant prices are skyrocketing so $30 would be normal for meal and tip.

Really can't think of other places, hope others chime in.

I've used KHSC before for BBQ bringing groups to the range.  A bit noisy but it's good with a lot of parking and there's always space.

Never been to Big City Diner in Waipio, I gotta check it out for my central events.

Parking seems to be the biggest issue with most places.  I'm testing out Tanaka Ramen at Ala Moana tomorrow, see how it goes.

Ruby Tuesdays (Moanalua) land is owned by the Navy. Which means no CCW allowed under federal law. Prob Tasers too.

Mangiamo by 604 across the street from Moanalua Shopping Center. I used to bartend there under the previous owner, they have outdoor covered seating for large parties. Food’s ok, parking is free.

That's a couple of good points.  Place should be CCW friendly.  Not sure if being on unrestricted military leased land automatically prohibits carry.  There would probably have to be signage.

I reserved big City Pearlridge for an event next month. The outside lanai can accommodate 60 people max. My event has about 35 people so I reserved the entire area for $100 per hour. The buffet package was about $30 per person. I have monthly meetings of 10 people for lunch and we just order off the menu. Expect to pay about $25 for lunch including soda and tip. I'm going to meet the banquet manager tomorrow morning to work out some minor details if you want to tag along.

That one and the one near the Arizona Memorial are ok for groups.  In past experience, the managers (I guess it depends who you talk to, who you are, who you know, etc) plays a BIG role in ease of arranging a group event.  Maybe different now that the Mangiamo location has an outdoor patio where they have parties.  There was a HS grad party when I went for happy hour a couple of weeks ago.

Been a few years since going out for these kinds of events.  Thanks, COVID!

Bravos at Pearl Ridge was popular with a separate party/meeting room.  For 10 people, a few tables pushed together on the dinning room floor works out fine.  larger groups probably should reserve the special event room.

I love their food including the endless garlic bread.

Sam Snead's Restaurant accommodates large groups both on the upstairs lanai and inside the restaurant.  Their menu is excellent.  Full bar.  We used to have many of our company's get-together's catered there with a small buffet and table service for drinks.

Chili's also accommodates groups.  We've had our tables taking up an entire wall once.  Good variety.  Good food.  Full bar.

I am not a golfer, but I have been to a few golf course restaurants.   Food was decent, not expensive and plenty of parking.

Would one be able to CCW at the NEX?  It's the same concept.

I'm going based on this. THe US Navy is Federal.

"Any Building Owned, Leased or Rented by the Federal Government — This includes buildings in national forests which are property of the federal government".  The Navy owns the buildings at Moanalua Shopping Center.

Great suggestion.  It jogged a memory of a family get together at Mililani Golf Club.  My mom and my aunties had a small gathering outside the restaurant.  It had outside seating and my mom and aunties stayed for hours and had a great time.  Nobody pushed them to leave.

I've dined at their restaurant previously and the food prices were reasonable and the food was good.  Plus liquor is served of course.

I heard Chili's pearlridge closed recently.  The outdoor table was a good place for small events and a central location.

Tanaka Saimin at Ala Moana was okay.  Got parking, usually no lines, and good food.  But can get a little loud in there at times.

I'm looking into the Navy leased locations.  Not sure if CCW is banned or not as usually there would be some sort of signage.

Keep me posted if I'm wrong. The problem is when googled, military bases came up majority of the time.

For Federal facilities it's normally just banned in buildings and you can carry on the lands.  There may be specific exceptions where banned I don't know about.  Any banned place requires notification of the ban with a sign or verbal notice.
For military bases, I know there's bans in restricted areas with secured entrances or security fences.  But I'm doubting there's bans on public areas without notification.

I just passed the new Tanaka Saimin restaurant that recently opened in Mililani Town Center.  It has outside seating and when I passed by I thought about this thread.  The outside area looks like a great place to hold small informal get togethers.

TBH, never attended any of these "social" meetings, but if I was to hold one, I'd try to make it at a local Mom and Pop kind of place to support them as opposed to feeding the larger food chain establishments or golf courses.
