Hunting on Oahu
« on: January 15, 2026, 02:26:57 AM »
Just finished my Hunter Ed course and when I was looking at the hunting maps I was actually suprised how many areas we cant hunt with rifles and shotguns on Oahu.  I feel so trapped and over regulated on this Island and It's honestly a fresh breath of air to see that we can use our guns for more than plinking at Kokohead.  I'm going to redeem my slice of freedom and start hunting to get the most outta my 2a rights.  I was really suprised to see hunting with firearms allowed in back of Aina Hana and Pearl City.  A little curious how this works - do firearms need to be in a case until in the hunting area or can I leave that crap in the car to avoid hiking in excess weight?  I always see hunters with bows and dogs but my pitbull is too fat and I dont have a bow. I DO have a brand new badass .308 bolt action and a dollar-store pump action that I would love to shoot some shit with.. Meat for the table and learning survival skills will just be a bonus.

Anyways, if any of you rifle hunt on Oahu I just wanna hear a little from you and  any tips advice you may have

I was looking at some bows, those buggas aint cheap.  I can imagine getting some choice looks walking into a hike with a .308 over my shoulder

Carrying a rifle into a hunting area:
- I take down my ar and carry it in my backpack
- for a long rifle, I would use a rifle sock if I have to walk thru a neighborhood……you might have to park a distance from the trail head.  On the west side, i didn’t use sock since there was only the old FHB retreat by the parking.

Archery
After seeing a guy on Alone get a broad head in his leg after it fell from the quiver, for me, I wouldn’t use a bow….. I’m an unlucky person.
