For those of you who dont, Karen Ertell was an Ewa Beach resident who was summoned to testify against Vernon Bartley. Bartley was on trial for the burglary of Karen's home. Before she could testify, Bartley broke into her home, then raped and murdered her.
Yesterday, Judge Virginia Crandall cleared Bartley of 1st degree murder, due to a technicality that the murder did not warrant First Degree because Bartley at the time was being tried for a juvenile case and therefore Ertell was not a witness in a "criminal trial." Basically the Prosecution wanted to go for life without Parole and proceeded with murder in the first. To do this, it had to be stated that Vernon Bartley committed the crime to prevent Ertell from testifying against him.
The fact of the matter is, it is clear we all live in a society where Police and the justice system are not in place to protect us but only to serve as a reactionary device. Please do not get me wrong, I mean no disrespect to our Police Department. In order for all of us to truly be protected, we all basically have to have a cop with us at all time. By the time Police, and the justice system are called upon to perform their duties, in usually means one thing... its to late, it means that you have already been made a victim, and sometimes, in worst cases, this means your either in the hospital fighting for your life, or dead!
I cant help but to wonder that if self preservation is suppose to be a natural instinct, what are most of these liberal Hawaii people made of? Why cant people see that the want for personal protection should not be a crime? Someone in a CCW state said it best, "I carry a gun because I can't carry a cop."
