SRGC Rifle/Pistol Range Rules
« on: June 20, 2013, 01:50:28 PM »
I just received an email from the Rifle/Pistol coordinator for the Schofield Rod & Gun Club (SRGC).

1. We currently shoot at 3 different ranges; CR1, KR4 and KR3.  Each range has a different distance that we can shoot out to.
CR1 we can place targets out to 300 yards/meters.
KR4 limited to 25 yards. We use it mostly for defensive shooting
KR3 has targets in place out to 1000 yards+.  We can only place targets out to 100 yards on KR3.

2.  .50 BMG is now allowed only at KR3.

3.  The rules are: CR1 and KR4 limited to 7.62 rifle (non-match) and below.  Any pistol caliber and black powder guns are allowed. If the ammo is legal in Hawaii, you can shoot it

Every hundred yards?  Steel plates?  If so how big?  Just wondering, I still need to go ahead and put in an application...

A note on CR1. Range Control can limit target placement to certain distances. I've been RSO when they limited it to about 100 yards a couple of times. So it is somewhat of a case-by-case basis.

That is why me and my friend are applying for RSO.  ;)

Cool!

However, just to clarify, it wasn't the RSOs and OIC who limited the range use that day, it was Range Control.  I thought they said something about targets that day being placed out further than that was either in conflict with the use of another range.  It kind of went in one ear and out the other as I wasn't the OIC.

Most guys place their targets anywhere from around 7 yards out to around 50 yards.  It's rare that we'll get someone even ask to put targets out that far.  So I could see how someone who is bringing their rifle, planning on confirming zero at 200 yards/meters would be mad if they drove all the way out there and found that they were limited to 50 yards.

50BMG I stand corrected.

ImKu:

KR-3 targets beyond the 225yds or so there are no stands to put targets up.  In the past Range Control has allowed for placement of targets to that distance but not beyond.  Range Control has also said before that you can't place beyond 15 to 25 yds too............a lot depends on who is staffing Range Control on the day of the shoot.  The targets at KR-3 are pop ups, silhouettes, some metal, rocks, etc.  To date I have not heard of SRGC being able to get the pop ups activated.  The silhouettes are pretty much always up.  The restriction of placing targets beyond "X" yds has to do with Range Control not wanting people out on range with some of the ammunition used (read depleted uranium, etc.).

Up to 500 yds or so there are features you can shoot at.  It is not too hard to get in the ballpark of what you are shooting at.  Once you pass that the next really easy feature that makes seeing bullet splash is a wash at about 900 yds.  The backstop makes it easy to see the splash.  Past that it is extremely difficult to tell.

BLKDRGN:

You really should do some research before you shoot out there unless you want to walk your rounds out.  At $5+ a pop it's an expensive way to sight in.  This is assuming guys can even see the splash.  You need to make sure you understand how your optic works and what kind of angle you need to build into your platform in order to assure your optic is capable of seeing splash/impact.  FYI with my 308/7.62 I have to dial out my scope to 8X in order to see splash at 900 yds.  I am also using Kentucky windage and holding on the lower 25% of my scope.  I'm way way out of adjustment on my scope.  I need "Y" moa rail/mout in order to account for that.

Last item............at KR-3 the distances are all estimated.  My range finder works fine in any place besides KR-3, but over there anything beyond 250 yds or so and the range finder does not return a distance.  It's not just my range finder either other guys have the same issue.

On KR-3 everything up to 500 - 600 yds looks close.  The 1400 yard silhouettes some guys (with a lot of experience) estimated at 1000 yds.

I will say again, it is not easy to shoot those distances.

I keep missing out on the KR-3 days for whatever reasons.  Hopefully we'll have one in July.  I've been wanting to take my Rem 700 .308 out there and see how far I can go.  I don't have any illusions of maxing anything out, but just something more than the 450 at Kokohead.

I don't even remember the last time CR-2 (well not CR-1) was available.  Then when KR-3 is available, Gus is running it and it's PACKED!

At kr3 I got my rem700 .308 out to 1500yd . You really need the right equipment to do it from p.d.a, spotting scope, terapin , good built rifle , match ammo and spotters who know what they are talking about .  We got it on within 10 shots thanks to my p.d.a and data. The rifle is just the beginning.
