How is Koko Head these days? Still fully loaded?
« on: July 11, 2013, 10:48:11 AM »
Last time I was there was sooooo packed.

Aside from Magnum/Honolulu Firearms down at Ward, is there anywhere else to shoot?

(Of course, aside from the Waikiki $$$$ joints for tourists).

When was your last visit to Koko Head? Hasn't been too bad the last couple of months. Still gets full -- w/waiting lists -- sometimes. The return of the pre-budget cut schedule has helped. And maybe lack of ammo has discouraged would-be shooters who didn't stock up before the scare.
At least now, no need to go at 0530 on weekends in order to start shooting at 0900 on the rifle target side. That's what it took in Jan--March this year.

I stopped paying attention to firearms stuff for maybe 6 to 8 months due to other matters that required my attention.

So, all my info is out of date about everything.

Is there still ammo shortage? Just the popular calibers right?

The ammo shortage is slowly easing, except for .22LR and some handgun calibers (I hear 9mm, which I don't fire).   You can find something in just about every other  caliber if you're patient,  but be ready for sticker shock. Prices are considerably higher than last year before the big scare.

Mayor Kirk Caldwell restored the hours at the Koko Head  rifle and pistol range in April: 1200 to 1600 Wed, Th, Fri; 0800 to 1600 weekends AND holidays except Christmas. Those used to be the hours before Oct. 2010, when the city cut the schedule 25 pct.  The first couple holidays after April  -- Memorial Day, Kamehameha Day -- were great: lots of open benches. Fourth of July was different. Got there about 0630 and most of the benches were already taken.   The right-hand side of the range was closed, just like on weekdays. Not bad, though, there was a brief wait list about 0930, but that cleared up by lunchitme.

hey thanks for the updates; I needed to get up to speed on the SITREP.

Aside from ammo, what about firearms themselves?

I had the hardest time last year trying to find some bolt actions but anyway, right now I don't think I will buy anything. (So I say today! :-D

Well, most of the LGSs have black rifles in stock now. Wasn't true six months ago. Bolt actions seem to be widely available.

And another bit of good news, the lines at HPD ain't nearly as bad as they were in December and January. Part of that is HPD adding people behind the counter and making forms available online. I think the bigger reason is just about everyone who was considering buying a firearm  after the post-Sandy Hook rhetoric about restrictions has already bought something.  Would-be newbies might also be deterred by the lack of ammo. So we are past that spike in demand, at least until the next scare.

Didn't know the forms are online. I will check HPD website this week to see.

Links to the forms are on this page:

Caution: Others on 2aHawaii have reported that HPD firearms unit folks rejected the forms they filled out ahead of time. Various reasons, and they seem to be inconsistent. Just go with the flow and don't lose sight of your goal.
