Digital Scale Recommendations
« on: July 05, 2013, 12:51:46 PM »
Looking to upgrade my Lee Safety Powder Scale with a digital one. I like the Lee but don't like waiting for the scale to settle down. The slightest breeze through the room is enough to keep the scale from settling.

Are there any digital powder scales that you recommend that are accurate and won't break the bank? Are they available here locally (Oahu)?

Gempro 250. Amazon sells them but the price is higher than I remember.  I use one and am very satisfied.
Here's some good info:

Just remember that electronic scales need to be left on for 12 to 24 hours before use to reduce drift and they all drift unless you spend 1,000 bucks on an electromagnetic force reduction scale.

Plus one on this.  I got the Hornady and it works well.  Plus you have the option of weighing stuff in karats if you're a jeweler, or grams if you're...well anyway, it weighs in grams if you want.

RCBS chargemaster

+1 on a chargemaster. It may seem like an expensive upgrade, but the automatic dispensing makes loading so much more efficent. Use the "McDonald's straw" mod to make it work best!

It will even meter varget with good accuracy with this mod. ;)

The "straw method".....

I looked over this post below and tried this modified straw method.  Results were a little better, but not to the pass/fail ratio I was looking for.
http://forum.accurateshooter.com/index.php?topic=3779862.0

I took a step back and thought it over... How can one break up the clumps so that the device can work properly?

So I put my little spin on the idea of the straw...

I run the straw in all the way to the rear of the machine, and I cut little teeth in the end, so that the direction of the tubes spin breaks up any clumping or bridging that may occur. The slick insides of the straw allow the powder to slip down the tube and not get caught up in a traffic jam and clump together.

With this setup, the throwing of the charge takes a little bit longer, but the pass fail rate has dropped to about 1 out of twenty overthrows.  Most times, like 90%, the over throw may be .1 grains over, easily scooped out to bring the charge to the correct weight.

This is with Varget powder.  The other powder I use IMR 8208 XBR has an even better pass/fail ratio.

This mod has sped up my loading process by an order of magnitude, and the ES and SD comes into line quite nicely for a Chargemaster thrown load.

Just tried the straw mod on my chargemaster and it worked GREAT! I was fighting the wind a little in my garage but I got 4 overthrows out of a100 rounds using Varget. I really can't complain. Thanks for the tip Heavies!!!!
