Just ordered some reloading equipment!
« on: February 20, 2011, 01:54:06 AM »
Well -- I waited long enough and finally said F-it... and ordered a press.

Now I just got to figure out where are people ordering supplies? And how are you getting them here.  (powder / primers) ?  Just wondering how that all works and what people are doing for it.

I ordered everything for .223 and .40 so I will want to learn to reload some of that in the near future.

Inquiring minds want to know, what did you pick up?

Did you just get a press or one of the kits? Reloading gets pretty in depth pretty fast. Personally, id pick up the reloading DVD hornaday puts out. On a single stage press, you are looking 5 ish minutes per round, easy.

Ogc has some components, beyond that, no clue. I use varget and h335 for .223

If you have questions, just ask.

Oh, if your dies break the tips off poly tipped bullets, adjust your seated die. Took me 15 or so bullets to figure that out. Thought they were seating crooked.

Dillon 550, in .40 and .223

I got a few friends who want me to reload ammo.  It comes with the books -- and for some reason, I like to read. So it won't be to long before I am up to speed.  I ended up picking it up from Brian Enos' website.

If you aren't an experienced reloader, be very careful setting up your dies, etc. Progressives make it 10x easier to screw up rounds via overcharging, etc.

You'll get the best accuracy from a single stage, but tons of decent ammo from a progressive.

My understanding is that the dillon dies and setup is one of the best. I am pretty observant, and can follow directions so we will see how it goes. I have a 2 year background in Safety and QA so hopefully that will all pay off for reloading.

Dillon makes some of the best reloading gear and with your background, you'll do fine. Look into getting a powder cop and factory crimp dies.

The cop checks your powder level after the charge is dropped to make sure there isn't a double charge. Also using a large powder helps. Ie I love varget because it's temp stable, and my standard load of 24.4 grains is something near 93% case capacity.

The factory crimps are wonderful as long as you use bullets with cannelure. The lee ones are iffy, but workable. Not sure if you need one with .40. Always used one on .45

Just curious, why didnt you go with the 650 or hornaday lock n load ap?

For $50 or so more, you get more functionality. (once I get a job, I'm getting the hornaday)

I spent a long time on calguns reloading section reviewing videos, reviews etc, as far as the 650, many people said it was 'too' automated. I want to try and pay attention, but the lee presses were just a little to slow for me. I wanted dillon, because, from what I have read, there is nothing better in terms of warranty and customer support. Price was also a concern, like almost 1800 dollars to get a full set of reloading equipment in one shot from tumblers, to separators, scales, gauges, calipers, etc etc. Electric trimmer wasn't that cheap either, hell just trying to do .223 seemed to add about 500 dollars lol (seriously wtf with die prices and stuff). I am fairly young, and I think, well I hope, that I can do this as a fairly serious business effort later on.

As a fair warning, doing it as a business requires you to get a ammo manufacturer ffl, tons of insurance, etc. Doing it under the table got a lot of folks in club fed.

You could sell it as "components" but that's still a grey area.

Just do a lot of research.

Yeah I am actually going to plan to get my regular FFL. I have a storefront that I can use, I just need to be able to generate the xxx dollars a month for it.
