Permit to Aquire pistols
« on: September 08, 2013, 09:53:59 AM »
I tried to post this earlier but it didnt show up so I will try again.

This has probably been posted but Cant find it. I had a Permit to Aquire rifles in the past, somewhere around 2002. The permit has long since expired. The question is are the forms that i filled out previously still on record or do I have to repeat the process all over again to now aquire pistols. I submitted a training affidavit when I first applied for the permit to aquire but it was only to aquire rifles. I now want to purchase a pistol.

Can any one post a step by step guide as to what exactly needs to be done? Someone says I needed to buy the pistol first then acquire the license, which I thought was kind of backwards but who am I to question procedures.
This is why i need step by step giudance. thanks for your help guys in advance.  :shaka:

In short you have to do everything again.

If you only had a rifle permit to acquire, you need to apply again and wait 2 weeks.
After 2 weeks you'll get your permit to acquire which is good for 1 year.
It allows you to buy as many rifles and shotguns as you can afford in the year without having to apply again.

If you're trying to get a pistol, it's a bit more complicated.
First you need to have a training class certificate that says you received training by an authorized trainer.
Or
You need to take the state hunters safety course.

After that you have to buy the pistol you want first, then ply to pick it up.
Wait two weeks, go back and pick up your permit to acquire.
Go back to the gun store with your permit and pick up the gun.
Go back to the police station to "register" the pistol.

Those are the steps in a nut shell

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

Save yourself some time, fill out and print the Medical, Mental and Questionnaire before you go down to HPD.

If you still have the expired long gun permit, take that with you.  It will make the application process a little quicker for you and easier for the PD.

Since you want a pistol, recommend this order:

Take the required training class for pistol ownership.
Buy the pistol (seller will have to hold it until you present a permit to acquire);
Go to HPD and apply for both permits:  long gun and pistol;
Pick up both permits after 2 week wait;
pick up the pistol from the seller;
return to HPD with pistol to register.

If the pistol is from a private seller, arrange to have him meet at HPD the same time you pick up the permits.  He can transfer the gun to you, and you can register it all in one trip.

Thank you for the replies guys! Appreciate it much. Now the questions is this, if i submitted a affidavit of training when i got the Permit to Acquire long guns, is that still in force or will I have to take another course. And if so do you know of anyone qualified to give such lessons? I will need their names and contact numbers. waiting all the way until December to take the DLNR course is absurd. Thanks my brothers in arms  :thumbsup:

if you go to the hunter's ed course before it's scheduled time, you get on the "waiting list"
they cram a whole ton of people into the class, because they get compensated by the amount of people taking the course

but i believe your affidavit is still good
do you still have it?

You have to present the training affidavit each time you apply for a pistol permit.  The ONLY time I haven't needed it was when I applied for one the same day I picked up another.  I figure they forgot to ask for it, and the permit I picked up had the info they needed for the new permit.

The Safety Training certificate never expires, so keep it in a safe place.  Take it to the PD each time you apply.

I've heard people ask this very question in line at the PD, and the answer was:  yes, the certificate needs to be presented every time you apply for a permit to acquire a handgun.

+1

There is no logic to the application procedure.  The police know you had a certificate the last time you applied for a permit.  They know the certificates don't expire.  They have copies of your certificate on file from when you applied.  But if you walk in there without it, you'll walk out empty handed.

Same with the permit once you get it.  They have a copy of the permit that they keep on file.  But if you walk in with the gun but without the permit, you'll walk out with you gun still unregistered.

No. Logic.

Take everything related every single time you visit the police.  Heck, I walked in to register a C&R purchase once that I got from CMP (at the time, a C&R replaced the shooting criteria).  I couldn't provide the address for the CMP, so they threatened to send me home!  Luckily, one of the cops took pity on me, and spent 10 seconds on the internet to find me the address.  Since then, I also take sales receipts with me, in case they feel like asking for an address again.
