Looking for Scope for my Remington 700
« on: November 10, 2013, 12:16:25 AM »
I have a stock Remington 700 SPS .308 with 24" barrel. I used to have a Nightforce scope but I moved it to my other rifle. I'm looking for a decent scope that will allow me to shoot up to 600 yards. At first I was planning on upgrading so I went with a pretty good scope but now I will just leave it alone. I plan on building a separate rifle with all the goodies. Would a $500 budget be good enough for this type of distance? I was thinking of a Burris C4 4.5-14x42 or a Leupold VX-2 4-12x40mm. What would you get?

Check out Vortex Optics....a lot of bang for your buck and they offer good discounts to Military and LEO.

I got a primary arms 4-14x44 first focal plane mil/mil scope on my Remington it's a nice cheap FFP scope that gets the job done and i have shot it pass 600.The clarity of the optic isn't gonna be a clear as a night force but it's a hell of a lot cheaper. Ive compared it to some cheaper votex and leupold optics and it is pretty close. I've noticed that your a guy that seems to want top of the line name brand type items so the primary arms scope might not be to your standards. If not check out swfa the 10x42m tactical mil/mil is a fixed scope but will do everything that your asking if your looking for a variable scope swfa make a 3-15x42 FFP scope that's a little more than 500. As stated before vortex make good scope and their warranty is life time but your not gonna get a FFP scope neer the price range of 500 bucks but if your not looking for a FFP scope they will be another good option hope this helps

Yes but to a certain degree. It's not because of the name brand, it's for the performance, durability, clarity, etc. I'd rather spend more once than going with a lessor product and it breaks or not be happy with it and I have to upgrade.

What kind of a reticle do you use, and do you hold high or do you count clicks when moving to greater distance? If you're not sure, then your question might be a bit moot, since shooting style usually informs scope type.

Some scopes are not as "repeatable" as others (even $$$ ones) if you count clicks and shoot close-far-close. Heck, most scopes' turrets don't even let you adjust them without taking your eye away. Some are Milrad, some MOA, some click 1/8, others 1/4 @ 100.

I guess there's just more to it than zoom/power and price, but that's just my opinion.  :shaka:

Just put a S-B PM II on your Visa card  ;) It'll look great on your rifle and your growing collection will be that much more impressive!

I have a stock Remington 700 SPS .308 with 24" barrel.

Oooooh. Aaaaaaah.

The 10/22 of 308s...lots of aftermarket accessories to upgrade everything on it so you can build a real taxi driver. Darn autocorrect, I mean tacky driver. Uhhh. Tack driver.

What size object are you trying to hit at 600 yards?

You can hit a house at 600 with most any scope and that precision rifle pointed in the general direction of said house.

I have a Vortex Viper PST FFP 4-16x50 on my Rem 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD and it's fine out to at least 600 yards.  I think I got it at around  $750, but that was with a "friend of friend" discount and before Vortex raised the prices.  If you are ok with the SFP, then I think that saves you around $150-200.  The Vortex Viper line is excellent value for the money.

I have no idea what the size of the target is at Pu'uloa as I haven't been there yet. Just preparing for it. I checked out the S-B PM II but it's way to expensive for a stock rifle. This rifle I do not plan on doing anything to it so I don't want to go overboard. As for the reticle I have no idea what style as I'm just getting into rifles with scopes. The most I've done so far is zero the scopes. lol. All I know is that I should match the reticle with the turrets. The Vortex 4-16x50 ffp seems great even though it went pass the budget. DRCK1000, do you want to sell yours to me so you can upgrade?

do a search to see what the target dimensions are for the f class target and what scope shooters are using for optics.................also good time to check what spotting scope set up are used.

I got a super deal on this one.  I really like it and I've compared it side by side with some nice Leupolds, Zeiss and others in the $1000-1500 range and I'm still happy with mine.

I've had my eye on NF 5.5-22 x 56 with the NP-R1 reticle, but those suckers are pricey, especially with the FFP models.

I am planning on putting together a rifle for hunting next season and it will probably just get some mid-range 3-9 Nikon or Leupold.

Are you including rings in your budget?  Have you considered a fixed magnification optic (SWFA SS 12x or 16x maybe)?  That would be in your current budget with a nice set of rings.  With that said my bias vote would be for a Vortex PST.  Lifetime no bs warranty and I just like reticle.  There are tons of reviews on the web on Vortex scopes.

Here is a site that has good deals sometimes:  http://www.samplelist.com/Riflescopes-C3391.aspx

*I plan on going to the Pu'uloa practice shoot and will be using a Vortex PST 6-24x.  You can check out if you want.

I have badger rail and rings and just need the scope. I figure adjustable since I'm not sure where we'll be shooting. One day koko may open past 100yrds or schofield will open to 1500yrds. i do have a nightforce 5.5-22x50 np-r2 on my other rifle. still got to zero that. i'll try to make the pu'uloa
