are the cops supposed to be shooting back at suspects who have hostages? btw doesn't California have strict laws against the type of guns that were used by the robbers?

Quote
When it was all over, the third hostage was found dead in the SUV and one of the robbers was also dead. The police chief said the hostage was a bank customer, and that she appears to have been used by the suspects as a shield during the shootout.

If the criminals are shooting at the cops, what else can the cops do but try to end it as soon as they can before the criminals hurt more people?

Well, one thing is the COPs can pull back and let the robbers leave.  The COPs can follow at a distance and try to engage them again in a less populated area.

But, that's contrary to what COPs seem to be taught today ... compliance is mandatory.  If someone doesn't follow your orders, open fire!

If public safety is really top of mind, then sometimes that takes precedence over apprehending the bad guys at that moment.

Some jurisdictions require COPs to suspend high speed chases in populated areas or business districts to prevent unnecessary injury to bystanders.  Once the perp is in a safer area, the COPs try again to stop him.

I think that policy would also work for fleeing robbers with hostages.

I am no LEO but it's one thing to pull back from a hostage situation where the criminals are boxed in and contained in a building.

It's another thing for a LEO to let criminals who have no regard for people's safety roam free and drive away with hostages.  I would think they are probably not gonna let those criminals go free if they are in active pursuit.

The following weapons were confirmed to be used by the Stockton Police during a news conference Thursday:
- AK-47 Type Assault Rifle
- 45 caliber Glock handgun
- 45 caliber Ruger handgun
- 9 mm Ruger handgun

In the same news conference, police announced that Ramos was the rear-seat passenger in the car,
and suffered no injuries during the shootout. They believe he used the third hostage, Misty Holt-Singh,
as a human shield.

Ramos and the two deceased suspects fired the AK-47-style rifles through the windows of the blue
SUV during the high-speed chase. During the pursuit, the two bank employees who were held hostage
were reportedly thrown or jumped from the vehicle. One of the employees was taken to a nearby hospital
with a gunshot wound, while the other was grazed with a bullet.

Ramos was arrested and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail. Stockton police report that the Ford
Explorer the gunmen were driving during the high-speed chase was traveling at speeds up to 100 mph.
When the vehicle came to a stop after after security forces successfully disabled it, the firing continued
between police and at least one assailant.

At least 14 cars were struck by bullets during the chase, reports ABC News.

Police Chief Eric Jones said the robbers were “no doubt” trying to kill the officers, in a news conference
on Wednesday.

Too bad California's death penalty was recently ruled unconstitutional, otherwise I would've saved the state some money and done this dirtbag free of charge.
No one is coming, it’s up to us.

Legislation should never be about depriving law abiding citizens of something, but rather taking those things away from criminals.
