I'll be moving to Honolulu very soon from NYC and I have a New York State hunter's education card. Does anyone know if this would satisfy my requirement firearm safety when I apply for my handgun?

I am not too familiar with the requirements here (I did read the FAQ post). I didn't need it in NYC when I got my HG permit but I did need to pay $430 to apply and wait 115 days to get approved, so I am glad it is much cheaper and shorter of a wait to get your license in HI.

Do people apply for both their hand gun and long gun permits at the same time? I hope to apply for both at the same time.

call hpd and check, but i have a friend that did it a couple of years ago, and it worked, despite the fact that his card was from high school

and yes, you should apply for both handgun and long gun permits at the same time
you do know that each handgun permit is specific to each handgun you are buying, while for long gun it applies to any long gun you buy?
