Maui Range / shooting (?)
« on: August 21, 2014, 12:31:38 PM »
Considering a job on Maui; how is the range, etc there?

I know there's deer hunting, and a private skeet place as well as a public range at Ukumehame but little beyond that.

Are there any other private shooting clubs I could look into? I saw MAGS is "building a range" but it sounds like it is in the same limbo as we see on Oahu with OGC and X-Ring, etc.

What are the shooting distances at Ukumehame?

Saw this thread https://2ahawaii.com/index.php?topic=3668.0 which answered some of my questions.

I don't really want to move somewhere that is much worse than Oahu.

Thanks.

I wish you luck.

There are groups on Oahu that are helping organize efforts to kill construction of a range here on the Big island.  They have gained some traction using the "stray bullet" bullshiite from the Kokohead range fiasco.

I would expect anyone trying to build a range on Maui to run into the same groups.  Maui was the center of the effort to kill the SuperFerry after all.

Yeah I'm really on the fence. I was born here and lived my whole life in the Pacific but I'm starting to feel this state will just end up like California and NYC.

Tired of the overpriced/crowded/luxury nonsense on Oahu and either planning to move to Maui (birthplace) or just leave the state entirely, probably for Washington/Oregon.

Did a bit of research, looks the rifle range is 200 yards which is certainly better than KHSC. Definitely concerned it will end up being shut down though.

I feel ya man, I'll be moving to Washington state in a few years. I lived there previously as a teen. Look forward to going back and living a little better/easier life.

Its a group called valley isle sport shooters. They have a website that posts their schedule. Its usually first sunday, second sat, third thursday for open shoot. Other days are cowboy action and ipsc. Cost is $10 bucks i believe, havent gone in almost a year. So days are really packed, people go about 5am and wait till the gates open to get a spot. Shooting starts at 8:30 and goes to 1pm i believe. so first come first serve, there are about 30 spots available. But dont have rules like 5 rounds in the mag or 1 shot every 5 sec. Slide fires are welcomed, you also dont have to build your own frame. just need targets to stick or staple on. There also is no caliber restriction. Max range is 200 yrds. Thats just down at ukumehame. In hailiimaile there is a shotgun range thats open wed nights from 4:30pm till 10:30pm and sunday from 8am till 4pm that does trap and sporting clays. Wed nights when lights come on usually around 7ish clays are white and in every round theres one orange clay. if u get that clay and hit it your round is free. heard there are other shotgun places but havent been there so i cant tell u about it.
http://www.valleyislesportshooter.com for the schedule for open days, cowboy action and ipsc
video of ukumehame open day
cowboy action
hailiimaile shotgun range
no this isnt me who did the vids, just seen the guy making the vid at ukumehame and found it searching. hope this helps make ur decision if u wanna move here.

No shortages on range officers. The range is operated by group valley isle sport shooters on the days listed on the site. It isnt like koko head where from what ive heard is operated by county workers.

personally i am not a fan of the ukumehame range. avoid it like the plague. probably one of the reasons i shoot my bow more than anything else right now. i will say shooting trap up in hailemaile is pretty fun though.

Last sunday of the month they have a long range hunter group that goes out. 5$ entree fee. You must provide your own target stand. Must be 6 feet tall. Only long rifles are allowed. No pistols. All shots fired must hit back stop is what the RO told me. Bump firing or mag dumps are frowned upon. Finally got to shoot there today. In the past i have gone but due to strong winds they call blow out and cancel it.

I shoot at Ukumehame Firing Range all the time and it's a blast! I've been going there for about twenty years now. Great group of people who really want you to have a good time and be safe at the same time. There are a lot of regulars there and the range officers are cool. I normally bring my own target stands as I sometimes get carried away with my shotgun <grin>. There is plenty of aloha, too. A few members even let me try out their firearms a few times. Maui no ka oi.
