HPD shooting over the weekend
« on: November 30, 2009, 07:25:15 AM »
What is wrong with these car thieves now-days. This is the third shooting in a month of a (suspected) car thief trying to run from through the cops.

Once again, good shooting by the HPD hitting only the driver and leaving the passenger unscathed.

KAPALAMA (HawaiiNewsNow) - For a second straight weekend and the third time this month, Honolulu Police opened fire on a driver.

It happened around 10:30 a.m. in the Kapalama area near the Kamehameha Shopping Center.

Hawaii News Now was the first at the scene, and got exclusive video of the 21-year-old driver as paramedics wheeled him into an ambulance just after officers opened fire on him.

"We heard what sounded like fireworks or firecrackers or whatever and I heard 3 shots," said Carolyn Bello, a witness.

"He was shot in the upper right area of his ribs is my understanding at this time," said Honolulu Police Department (HPD) Captain Letha DeCaires.

Honolulu police say the suspect nearly hit a plainclothes officer while driving a stolen white Neon. He had a female passenger.

Undercover officers found the couple after following a stolen gray truck, which turned into Makuahine Place. When police caught up, they found the truck, unoccupied, next to the Neon. Two other men were nearby. One of them was arrested on four warrants.

"The white neon immediately as they got out of their vehicles, revved their engines, squealed their tires and made motions to try and exit the area," said Capt. DeCaires.

That's when the car nearly hit the plainclothes officer who approached them. As police arrested the wounded driver, the woman fled, but later turned herself in. The driver is in stable condition. Police say he has four prior misdemeanor convictions, and will face multiple felony charges.

Investigators are looking into whether the suspects knew the undercover officers who swarmed them were police officers.

I say car thieves are finally getting whats coming to them.  Of course, thanks to their stupidity, they all gave HPD a justified reason to shoot.  Anyone who is willing to run down another human being is capable of greater, more serious crimes.  This may be a bit cynical, and people may not agree with me, but as a victim of crime myself, if a few shots were taken to the torso, what happened to the one to the head?  I dont want to have to spend tax money to house these assbags, I just want them to completely go away.  A few years down the road, as history has shown, we will see this dumbass' name again in the paper for some violent crime instead of a car theft.  Then, at that time, it will be truly be sad that he had the opportunity to be let back into society.

I'm very impressed by the HPD and these recent shootings, just a few rounds fired in each situation but most if not all of them hitting the criminal.  As far as the torso shots, the HPD is trained to aim for center mass, and not necessarily take headshots.  I agree though, if they're willing to steal a car and attempt to run over police officers chances are they never were and never will be contributing members of society.  Might as well save the tax payers money and cull them out now.

So I thinking HPD should switch from the 9mm to 40S&W, 45ACP, or best yet, 10mm :)

I for one would not mind my tax money funding the added expense for a more effective round.
