Cheapest software to learn a new language.
« on: July 23, 2015, 04:00:40 PM »
Hello everyone,

Any recommendations on software to learn Russian or Arabic cheaply and effectively? I gave the Russian rosseta stone app a try for the iphone (level 1 free) and it was awesome but, there has to be a cheaper alternative. Thanks!

There is a freebie app called Duolingo.

YMMV cuz it is free and supposedly contributed to by ordinary folks.

(Q, the dude might be working for our Services and needs to prepare to operate in those theaters).

Just curious what you consider too expensive for the software? I see Best Buy has the software on sale currently. Level 1 is $129, Level 1-3 is $199 and Level 1-5 is $249. And the online version is $199. And I see Amazon has similar prices plus $229 for a download instead of a disc for Level 1-5. I realize this is not free, but if the software is awesome it might be worth the investment. Especially if you can use it in your work.

I have used a website called Babbel in the past. They still want a subscription cost. But if you don't take a long time to learn it can be much cheaper. But if you take a while to learn the costs can be similar to Rosetta Stone. I didn't think this website was that great. But you should decide for yourself.

Also, one last suggestion. Amazon has this:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0307972100/?tag=2ahawaii-20

It gets a very high rating from reviewers. I have not used it myself.

Let us know what you decide to do.

If I had to learn it to talk to Nicole Kidman, any damn tool would work.  My memory would be amazing!

Everyone,

Thank you so very much for the information. I would like to learn Russian or Arabic. Russian because it seems easy for me to learn, i feel very confident in what I have learned via a free app. I would like to learn Arabic because it seems like there is a mosque in every city and it may come in handy. I will be a civilian shortly so advancement points are useless, this is just something I would like to do. Thanks again guys!

You can find some free language podcasts on the Internet if you are interested.  Start on ITunes to qualify the language websites since some might be shady or may charge $$ for a subscription.
