Got a co worker who loves his SKS.  Said he can take on a POS AR @ 600 yards anyday. Invited him to our next match.

I'd wager my money on any quality built 20" HBAR AR over a like made SKS in distance shooting. Under 300 yards, and then I might make it a toss up. But anything over 500 yards and I'm pulling on the AR for overall MOA accuracy...

But again just my view. USMC love of the ol' fashioned M-16 and all that... 

Huh.  I am a huge fan of the SKS.  Love the gun, love the cartridge, consider it my mid-sized "go-to" gun.  And I would not waste the ammo on a 600 yard target.  The SKS, like the AK, is designed to work in extremely hostile conditions.  Which means generous clearances in action, chamber, barrel.  Which is the opposite of accurate. 

Now, against a POS AR, maybe he's got a chance.  It would have to be pretty S'y, though!

I'll put my money on the better shooter with the pet handload.

The next Puuloa Shoot is 22 October if we can get the stars to align properly. 23 Oct is the Garand Match.

A good SKS can be accurate enough (my dad has a Russian one that holds 1 1/2 MOA), but it's really hard to demonstrate that because the trigger is so bad.

Borrow a AR-10?

For those that don't follow the NRA and CMP Service Rifle scene, the AR15A2  has been winning. It is the competition shooters that has been pushing the success of the .223 Remington and AR15/M16 combo to to outshine the M1A/M14-308 Win.

Although it'll be years before I can scrape together enough funds to purchase an evil black rifle, I do enjoy pondering the pros and cons of each, and I've gone back and forth several times.  Shot KingKeoni's AK at the range, and man that thing was sweet.  But then I got home and read up on both, and I think I'll eventually be going with the AR when I make my purchase.  It's basically exactly what ren said in the OP; a good AK might match up well with a crappy AR.  I looked at some of the stuff that's out there online, and "minute of pie plate at 100yds" or "minute of bad guy at 300" just doesn't cut it for me.  If I had all the money in the world, I'd buy one of each, and maybe by the time I'm old and gray I will have done so; but my first EBR is definitely going to be an AR.  The accuracy is what I'm going to notice at the range or on the hunt, and in those situations, reliability isn't too critical.  If by some horrible twist of fate, I ended up in a real end-of-the-world, full on firefight with Nazi zombies or Russian paratroopers, I'll be trusting to the good Lord for plenty already, if He's going to get me through at all, I'm sure He'll have no problem making my rifle feed properly.

Back, last year, I had a running monthly 'postal match' here on the forum. But due to lack of participation it kind of got shelved. Also, my variable work schedule kind of made it hard for me to keep up on it.
Now that there has been a increase of forum members, maybe we (someone) could start that up again.

.22 Matches are 1st full Sundays of each month at the Koko Head Silhouette range.
High Power Rifle NRA and CMP Matches are the 2nd or 3rd Weekend of every month at Puuloa.
There is a NRA and CMP Pistol Match this weekend  at Koko Head hosted by the Chinese Gun Club

There are many venues to prove you are the best. Good training, good equipment and hard work will get you there.

But it is easier to talk trash
