I don't think it would have been necessary in this case... Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can legally carry openly or concealed in your own house, right?

The fact the attack was in her home is incidental.  The reality is, he could have chosen to attack her outside as she exited her car, as she walked to the house, while she opened the door ....

The thing about violent people is, they get to choose when and where you are going to encounter them.  It's up to you to prepare for every possible scenario.

Arguing the specifics don't support CCW is being too narrowly focused.  The take-away should be "There are violent people targeting ordinary people at random, and we need to be able to protect ourselves whenever and wherever that might occur."
