I just had a co-workers wife buy a pistol at a LGS and they made a big deal to them about the Gold Dots being what HPD used. I agreed it was decent ammo but not necessarily the best, especially paying about $10 more than OGC for a 20 box.

The couple was sold on the "HPD bullet" like it was some kind of super bullet. Im also still disappointed this LGS sold them a subcompact XD for a home defense weapon  AND charged a good $125 more than other shops

I could really care less what peoples opinion is on HPD and what rounds they use.  Having said that, Speer Gold Dot is not just "average" or "decent" ammo, it is some of THE best and often arguably the top 2 or 3 in defensive ammo on the market today.  I have no ties with Speer but with the numerous ballistics courses that I have attended and conducted on my own, even courses held by different companies and direct competitors, time and time again shows who the top contenders are and Gold Dots are in the top of the top.  It really is so close that the top 3 or 4 in pistol selection show no major differences.  So flip a coin, it is that close with the top contenders.

Just to clarify, in case some of that was re: me,  I actually just questioned the city spending lots of money on good ammo.  I have no questions about the quality of the ammo at all (in terms of speer).   I just wouldn't put it past the city to not give all of our officers great ammunition is all.

It was more to clarify that Speer Gold Dot is great ammunition which some seemed to elude to it not being good ammo or that the HPD does not use great ammo and Speer Gold Dots are top notch.  I will however concede that their current .223 choice is not optimal IMO, even though it has worked in the documented incidents as of this time.  The .308 and .50BMG are top notch choices.  As for the City, they do not really have much input on the ammo types, but budgets all come from the City that the HPD obviously has to manage or work with in house.  I will however say that one certain gun shop owner FORCED the City into purchasing some absolute CRAP duty ammunition for a particular unit.  I really shouldn't say forced, maybe swindled or deceived the City into accepting a certain CRAP ammo.  Fortunately there will be no more dealings with that individual and that shop is no longer open, at least under previous ownership.  This mistake occurred once and decisions were made by people who had no expertise or no business making those decisions.  Fortunately I believe that mistake has been remedied and hopefully it will not happen again in the future. 

Not that there is necessarily any confusion, but the Federal AEP is practice ammunition only.
