Was it wet when you stuck it in?

If there was water residue inside the bucket before you stuck it in, it creates an air pocket inside, and that's what makes it hard to separate.
You can wait till it dries and it may come apart.
Try rolling it on the ground while pushing on it to create a gap to let more air in
Fill the bucket with water and let it over flow.  It should fill both buckets and let them come apart.
If those don't work, im not sure

If those don't work, drill a hole in the bottom of one of them and they should come right apart.

Put 'em back where you found them and forget about it for a year.

FINALLY.

You have no idea how many buckets I have destroyed in a rage when attempting to pry them apart with a hammer / screw driver / etc.

If you put solids in the holey bucket then duct tape will do you well (On the inside) to if you need to plug the hole. If you put liquids in the holey bucket then that spray sealer seems to work on TV. The key to it never happening again or having to drill a NEW hole is to always keep the bucket with the hole on the bottom.

Put the buckets in hot water and dishsoap and roll them around until they separate.  The water/soap will lubricate between the two stuck buckets and the hot temp will expand whatever air is left inside and push them apart.

No holes to drill. 2 good buckets.  Voila

my theory-
I was thinking a hair dryer to warm the trapped air and simultaneously expand the outside bucket.
 Never tried it tho...

I'll take the holey bucket to make another sink.
I mean, if you have no use for it.

My first job was dishwasher at a bakery.  I had to unstick hundreds of buckets in my stint there. Hot soapy water.  It works

I put my fingers underneath the lip or lower rim edges of the top bucket by the rim with both hands equal distance apart and push down on the bottom bucket with my thumbs.
Works with garbage cans too.  :geekdanc:
I have a $hi& load of buckets and garbage cans  to choose from but use this method as I am too lazy/busy to go get a different bucket/garbage can. :grrr:
