Coffee with a cop
« on: April 08, 2016, 10:11:43 AM »
he Honolulu Police Department is inviting community members to discuss concerns over coffee.

"Coffee with a cop" is a national Department of Justice initiative that allows the public to ask questions and learn more about police work in an informal setting.

The program has been implemented in all 50 states since 2011.

Honolulu police officers are holding their first sessions next week. There's a session Tuesday at a Mililani McDonald's and a Wednesday session at a Honolulu Starbucks.

Probably. You'll need to sign a release relinquishing all your privacy rights for all your medical records so they can determine if you are physically and mentally fit to consume large quantities of caffeine. Exemption for law enforcement.

I think my experience is quite the opposite.

I personally think this is a great idea. Community relations to the police are very essential and this is a way cops can hear the public, the public can hear the cops, and all sorts of myths about police can be broken down.

I'd group HPD into categories:
1.  Pro 2a...the small minority.
2.  Anti 2a...a bit bigger group
3.  The ignorant Anti 2a, the vast majority that only shot at the police academy and the only thing they know is other people with guns can shoot them on the job.

Educate those that are ignorant by taking them to the range, inviting them to the HRA Shooting Sports Fair in June, talking to them about shooting and how the 2a people are on their side.

We can create an Adopt a Cop program.  Get our most experienced shooters to mentor their weakest shooters.

The retired officers I know are quite gun friendly. One is a good friend of mine and we shoot at the local range often.

I'm a cop and pro; letting responsible citizens exercise all their rights.  Oh, and yes, I am in the minority.   Most cops here are just unaware of the need for armed responsible citizens.  Those few of us, true story,  that have found ourselves wrestling on the ground with a drugged thug, only that have a responsible citizen jump in to assist, have had are eyes opened.   Please, the way to friendship and support from cops, is to understand are views and then to help us understand yours.

Modern police work is changing very rapidly, this is the time to learn, share, teach, and support one another......or grow horribly apart.  We are only human and can only learn when taught.

Thank You

Don't worry 2aHawaii, a bunch of us got your six.

thumbless, thank you for your post and for presenting your point of view.  I'm not a big fan of what Maj Robinson at HPD firearms division is doing but there are those of us here who are *generally* pro-LEO and appreciate the work that you do.   Enforcing the law and keeping the peace is not an easy job.

I challenge any anti-LEO member here to put yourself in the shoes of a LEO to understand the duty or sacrifices required by the job.  As firearm owning citizens, we train in the event that we find ourselves in a situation where we need to defend ourselves and / or our families from someone that would do us harm.  LEOs face a certain amount of that risk everyday they put on the uniform.

I've personally gone on an evening ride-along in cop car and appreciate the work that our guys in blue do.  Perhaps, some of the folks here who have never gone to one should try it out.

Go on a few 911 call responses and see what the job entails.
