Canadian sniper sets world record with 2.2-mile pickoff of ISIS fighter (Read 5772 times)

A Canadian sniper set what appears to be a record, picking off an ISIS fighter from some 2.2 miles away, and disrupting a potentially deadly operation by the terror group in Iraq.

Shooting experts say the fatal shot at a world-record distance of 11,316 feet underscores how stunningly sophisticated military snipers are becoming. The feat, pulled off by a special forces sniper from Canada’s Joint Task Force 2, smashed the previous distance record for successful sniper shots by some 3,280 feet, a record set by a British sniper.

2.2 Miles?!?!  :o

Mr. Farknocker

Just saw the headlines. That's nuts.

Anybody have any idea what type of ammo these snipers use? The article references Hornady but does not identify the round. I heard that flat nose bullets (like the wadcutters used is pellet guns) are used because they minimize the errant movement of the bullet as it travels, thereby leaving the spotter/shooter to focus on the drop. I have no idea whether this is bunk or not.

Yeah, that makes the Brit sniper 1.5 mile shot I posted on May 22 look like an amateur...

that would not "fly" as the BC would be degraded

Amazing shot.

I'm amazed how many times I can miss a 12" gong at 100 yards.

At 11,316 feet and an initial muzzle velocity of 2,641 ft/s (per Wikipedia  ??? ), that would be 4.28 seconds of flight time.  I'm not going to even try to calculate the velocity loss over that distance, but I would guess that the true flight time is somewhere a lot more than 5 seconds.  Even thinking about that kind of shot makes my head start to spin.

.50 BMG possibly? This story references the rifle as a McMillan TAC-50.

I have been watching videos on long range shooting and there is so much math that goes into a shot this long it is crazy. It includes:
Ambient temperature
Ammunition temperature
Altitude
Angle up or down
The rotation of the earth
The curve of the art
Humidity
Barometric pressure
Distance
Wind

Some of these are easy to factor but certain ones, wind especially, are very hard to factor.

The earth is flat.

The earth is flat.

Especially in the desert ....

I plugged in a 50 cal A-Max and the distance into a ballistic calculator for a rough calculation. The flight time was approximately 8.5 seconds and the drop at 3800 yards was approximately  800 feet
