This has been discussed before but I have specific questions. I replaced the flash hider on my 300 BLK with a muzzle break and now I want to add one to my VEPR to improve accuracy but it's not threaded and there's no muzzle cap or detent pin. My options are:

1) Hire Dexter or X-ring or a local gunsmith to do it for me.
2) Do it myself. From my research, it looks like I could use a 5/8-24 RH Die which would fit the OD of my barrel. The problem is that the thread guide is .308 and my barrel is .311 so I'll have to add tape to make it center.

3) Forget about it and be happy with what I got.

I'd prefer #2 because I'm cheap and I'm not afraid to try it. Opinions?

4.  Buy a threaded barrel to replace the original.  Then, if you change your mind again, you can swap back.

I never thought of that. Not sure if there are any replacements available.

Update: Need a hydraulic press to change the AK barrel.

i didn't think that AK-47 barrels were threaded, swappable, like AR's.  I thought they were drilled and pinned in, into the trunnion? excuse me if i'm showing my ignance, i don't have any AK's.

also, i wouldn't do it myself, because the threads need to be precisely centered with the barrel bore, which may or may not be precision concentric with the muzzle OD.  unless you have a lathe, etc.

The 14x1 LH is tempting but I believe I'd need to grind a bit off from 5/8 to 14mm.

Yes.

Dexter said he can do it for $75 so I'll do that but only if he'll let me watch. 

All fixed. Dexter did a great job. The barrel was under .625 so he shaved it down to fit the 14mm muzzle break I already bought. He made a custom crush washer for it so it didn't stick out funny. I'm planning to try it on Friday.
