pistol magazine?
« on: February 13, 2012, 08:31:38 PM »
Ok so i ordered a sten magazine for my mpa 9mm pistol. Its a 33 round mag that i ordered to have been pinned/blocked at 10 rounds. The only reason i ordered this magazine is because the 10  round factory ones that sit flush with the magwell are impossible to find now. So  I received my package this evening and to my horror they were not pinned. I freaked out, and called the company right away. The guy on the phone basically tells me "dude dont worry about it, theres some new guys in the back and they probably just read your order wrong, were not trying to get you busted." I didnt want to talk to this idiot anymore so im going to try and get a hold of the owner tommorow.
So  basically my question is what should i do?  I already dissamsbled them, but im afraid that ill still get in trouble because they shipped it as an assembled, unpinned magazine.  Should i destory/turn them into the authorities and explain the situation?I do not want to get into trouble for someone elses mistake. How should i handle this?

First, resume normal breathing.  In with the good air, out with the bad.  You probably have a copy of the confirmation email, right?  I'd check and see if it says something about the mags having a 10-round capacity, and print it.  If it doesn't say that, send the company an email.  The idea is you want some sort of proof that you made a good faith attempt to purchase a legal magazine, and there was a mixup, so if you don't have that invoice, send them a WTF email about why they sent you the wrong product.  Then I'd call the various sundry gun stores and ask what they charge to pin a magazine.  Keep it disassembled, take it to the gun shop, get it back properly pinned and fully assembled, enjoy new magazine.  The other option would be to send it back and demand that the shipper replace it with the proper magazine.  Up to you.  And no, I wouldn't destroy the magazine or go make a confession-you're the victim of someone else's mistake that's not hurting anyone.

I am not a lawyer--legal eagles, feel free to chime in and chastise me if I'm giving bad advice.  This is only what I would do if I were in your shoes.

Don't even pin it. All the research I've done I can't find the HRS stating that you only can have a 10 round mag. I wouldn't volunteer the info on your hicap mag. I think the 10 round limit is just a kokohead policy. Correct me if I'm wrong, and provide a suitable reference.

Thanks cougar, i feel a little bit better now. I just found my email receipt and it says i was charged an extra fee for having the mags pinned which i just printed out. But the paper receipt that came with the package only has the magazines listed  and says nothing about having the mags pinned.  I also emailed the company explaining  that there was a mixup on there end, and that i wanted them to acknoledge their mistake.
Would a pop rivet be suitable enough, or does it need to be something stronger?

You could even put chopsticks in them.  Thats what I did to my 30 round cobray mags. sad.

on some mags we took 3/16" rods and cut them to fit and tack welded them to the bottom of the mag (applies to steel only)

We need to repeal that stupid law.  I can change a mag in under a second.

Don't pop rivet your magazine.

I think John Pereira makes magazines limited (10) capacity for you.

I'll find his number later for you.

He glues a plexi spacer to the bottom of the follower.

It satisfies the law and if you ever move to a state that allows standard capacity magazines or if this state repeals their stupid limited capacity requirement, you just have to buy a new follower ($5-$10) and your magazine is as good as new.

I have a couple magazines that he did so at some point I'll post some pictures for you to see.

Thanks keoni I'd apreciate that. Also why would pop riveting be a bad idea, is it not considered permanent enough?

For a lot of reasons.

One is that it might interfere with the ability to insert and eject it from your firearm.

One is because when you either A) move, or B) the dumb law gets repealed, you have ugly holes in your magazines.

One is because depending on where/how you rivet it, it might interfere with the spring and or operation of the mag.

Any talks of getting it repealed? The Vector Kriss feel so damned neutered since it takes Glock .45 ACP mags or the Beretta Storm carbines

Yes, there was a bill introduced in the legislature to repeal the 10 round limit on magazines. It was never scheduled for a committe hearing, much like the concealed carry bill(s), so it is dead for the year.
