What if??...
« on: March 05, 2012, 05:50:10 PM »
...I didnt register my handgun within 72 hours of it arriving to the island. Hypothetically speaking of course. I am planning a trip to the mainland (where i used to live) and want to bring some of my firearms back with me. Due to logistics, i wont be able to register within the 72 hour limit. Will my peepee get slapped for this? Do i need to show some sort of proof of the arrival date? And should i rearrange my itinerary to be able to make it down there and register(dont want to because it will cost more $$$). I dont want to get a new pair of silver bracelets, and i dont want my firearms siezed (if they even do that).

Thanks.

Tried searching a bit for a similar question before i posted.

I was really worried about this same question, since the day I intended to do the registration turned out to be a state holiday of some sort. Because of work, I was going to end up busting the 72 hour limit, so I called the firearms desk and they said don't worry, just get there as soon as possible. Of course, that's not in accordance with the statutes, but at least they're fairly reasonable about it. And like the previous poster said, they don't require any proof of when you arrived.

I bought a rifle from someone.

They brought the rifle from the mainland with them two years prior to selling it to me.

They totally forgot to register it.

They told the officer at the firearms desk about their oversight.

The rifle was registered to them first, then registered to me.

Although they seem inconvenient, the gun laws here are for keeping guns out of the hands of criminals.

Most of the officers working in the firearms division are gun owners and shooters. They're not there to punish you. Just doing a job.

Your number one Option for Personal Security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

Perhaps my fault, but I always thought firearms division closed at 4 not 430, so I always rushed after work or waited full the next day. Anywho, I ended up registering a lower like 2 weeks later. They never said anything, just the usual where did you get it from. I was more worried about having them in my car. I know bad move.

On another note, how often or when do gunshop owners submit paperwork?

And finally, since the firearms section is closed on the weekends, I don't even count those as days, (must register within 10 days)
