Theoretical Question
« on: December 03, 2017, 03:37:56 PM »
I was reading an article on a new revolver recently by one of my favorite gun writers. It was about the new Ruger GP-100 in .44 Special. Can't remember if it was in Guns or American Handgunner? Anyway, he kept calling the revolver a six gun or six shooter which is a common reference to a revolver since most revolvers hold six rounds. But the gun he was writing about only holds 5 rounds.

So the theroretical question is, is a revolver that holds 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 or 10 rounds still considered a six gun or six shooter?

It's like the battle between clip and magazine.  Magazine is the official term, but we know what is meant and it doesn't really matter.

six shooter refers to a 6 shot revolver specifically

if you're shooting a revolver that' different, you can refer to it as a wheel gun or a revolver.  They make 10 or 12 shot 22 revovlers, would be kinda silly to call that a "six shooter".

It is like when I am working on something and tell my wife to get me da dakine.  Dakine is not the proper term for pliers, but she knew what I meant and all is good.

First off, BUY IT. Whether is be a 5 to 30 shooter!

I’ve heard people call revolvers six shooters. Never really thought about it that much that they might be referring to an actual 5 or 7 shooter. Just like how people call refrigerators and ice box. As long as they communicate what they want to, then all good.

And last, BUY IT!!!

Maybe he wants perps to think there is 6 in the revolver so if he runs out, the perp will believe there's one left.

or if it's a 7 shooter, he shot 6, but still has one left.

I think they now make some smaller cartridge ones with 7 now.  .38/357 and 9mm come to mind.

"did he fire 6 shots or only 5?  you gotta ask yourself 1 question, do I feel lucky?"
hope you feel real lucky, bc this GP100 has 7 shots!!!   :D

I think this issue was settled by Don Knotts.

In the old days they called 'em six shooters, even though it was common safety practice to only load 5 and one empty chamber under the hammer....
