This event was boring. There were 4 candidates present:
Douglas Ching (D)
Kaniela Ing (D)
Calvin Griffin (N)
Michele Tippins (L)
Each one was asked generic questions like what was the most controversial thing you did, favorite congressman, your 3 most important positions, etc and only had 1 or 2 minutes to answer each. So you didn't get any details.
What I got out of it is how they speak and present themselves. Ing was very progressive on the issues and the best presenter and most energetic. Chun was liberal and you could tell he had the most background and experience, but was more traditional/conservative when he talked. Griffin was a veteran and was like someone you met on the street, more humble but I don't think he has any political experience. I was hoping Tippins would jump on Libertarian positions like small government, less regulations, individual rights, etc but all she talked about was marijuana.
Things I learned is it's difficult for a regular guy to challenge a person with way more experience in politics or business. The experienced candidates talk about big movements and grand schemes, talking over people instead of to them. Inexperienced people will either try to rise to challenge them or be themselves which won't work. What would work is connecting to regular people which I saw Trump do. Even though Trump is a billionaire tycoon, during the election speeches I thought he was standing in front of me having a conversation. Someone not just talking to me, but someone I could talk to. I think that's the successful strategy if anyone here were to run for office.
