Spent case stuck in charging handle
« on: July 17, 2018, 02:31:51 PM »
Anyone ever experience this?

I had a spent casing stick in the groove of my charging handle.
I couldn't pull the charging handle back as the neck of the spent case was stuck in the groove.

Happened twice. First time I could clear it but second time it was wedged like a MoFo.

I called Mike over and he got a screwdriver and a hammer and banged on the BCG until it cleared.

I asked him about it and he said he'd seen it before and to just shoot it to check function.
Didn't malfunction the rest of the day.

I've since changed the charging handle to a BCM and am changing the buffer to a H2. (I was using an H buffer)
Haven't tested it yet.
14.5 pinned carbine gas length BCM upper with BCM BCG.

I was using an aftermarket extended latch charging handle.

Anyone ever seen this and any thoughts?

Happens once in a while.  There's several ways to clear it depending how the case is positioned.  They involved pushing the bolt back while pushing the handle forward.

If no live round is chambered, put a rod down the barrel and push the bolt back.  Wont scratch or damage the rifle.

Lever the bolt back with something.

Lock the handle forward and whack the buttstock into the ground.  Might jam again.

Pull the charging handle back while slamming the buttstock into the ground.  Lock the bolt back.  Slam the charging handle forward.  Could damage the buttstock.

Did it look like this?  But with a spent case?  The bolt may be slightly forward as well.

If so, that's bold override malfunction.  Lots of videos on that to clear.  Can use tool, but way I learned was mortar method while holding the bolt catch.  Need to get the bolt back far enough to engage the bolt catch.  Once you do, you hit the charging handle forward and it clears the casing (or round).

    That looks familiar, sucked.  :grrr:

Weirder yet was I once had a primer come loose and find it's way into the mouth of the BCG gas key.
Fit (jammed) perfectly in the bend of the gas key!

Imagine the odds of a primer coming loose and falling directly in front of the gas key port precisely when the BCG slams forward.  ???
