The nearby area isn't exactly bad but it's not quite good either so I can't understand leaving a door unlocked nor "investigating" something off without some kind of weapon.

Apparently the dog wasn't a big dog either...

What I really want to know however is how the victim intended to safely exit the home with deaf Alzheimer's family member in tow while there are bad guys there, especially since firearms were either in a safe or otherwise inaccessible to the victim.  It's hard enough to move through a house with someone who doesn't know tactics let alone someone who may or may not even know there's a threat in the home.
